Claire Adida is Professor of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego. She is also a faculty affiliate at the Policy Design and Evaluation Lab, the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies, the Stanford Immigration Policy Lab, and the Evidence in Governance and Politics Group. She is on the editorial board of the American Political Science Review. She is known for research on comparative ethnic policies focusing on identity, immigration and integration, inter-group cooperation and conflict, as well as the use of survey experiments. She has a PhD in political science from Stanford University. Her research projects have covered how voters in West Africa hold politicians accountable; the experience of Somalis who immigrate to the United States, how to increase inclusionary attitudes towards Syrian refugees, among other topics. .. more

This piece is everything. The excerpt about social cohesion isn’t just wishful thinking. Studies, some I’ve conducted, show that people differ in their ability to empathize, but that they can empathize with folks who do not share their social identities.

An excerpt: “The federal surge into Minneapolis reflects a series of mistaken MAGA assumptions. The first is the belief that diverse communities aren’t possible: “Social bonds form among people who have something in common,” Vance said in a speech last July. “If you stop importing millions of foreigners into the country, you allow social cohesion to form naturally.” Vance’s remarks are the antithesis to the neighborism of the Twin Cities, whose people do not share the narcissism of being capable of loving only those who are exactly like them.”

An immigration judge denied them bond, citing “insufficient assets.” These children could remain in detention for years while their case is appealed.

The testing ground for Bovino’s Operation At Large was Los Angeles. A California judge initially prohibited ICE/CBP’s most flagrant constitutional violations. SCOTUS overruled her 6–3, handing Bovino a blank check to inflict unspeakable brutality on Chicago and Minneapolis. The 6 bear so much blame.
