The Virginia Senate just told UVA it’s not getting state funding if it accepts the compact since UVA exists to serve Virginia, its residents, & their interests—not be a tool of the federal govt. Scoop from our student newspaper, who’ve been doing vital reporting www.cavalierdaily.com/article/2025...

If highly selective universities, meaning those that admit <=10% of applicants, selected only on HS GPA, 63% of incoming students would be women. Wouldn't change much if considered test scores.

Trump's "compact" would hurt young men, and esp. young white men.

I doubt Linda "A1" McMahon knows this.

Motivated reasoning is very powerful in economics. But focused and creative empirical research wins.

We just spent 6 months to add 1 figure to this paper. Some people said, "Couples aren't prioritizing men's careers. Men just have better earnings opportunities when moving."

Earnings effects of moves for couples on the left, singles on the right. Negligible gap between single men and women.
Event study coefficients that show that men's earnings rise more than women's among couples following a cross-commuting zone move (left panels). The pattern is muted or reverses among single men and single women (right panels).

This is nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system.

I am not fearful — I am fearless.

We will fight these baseless charges aggressively, and my office will continue to fiercely protect New Yorkers and their rights..

This is a must-read for anyone reporting on the Trump regime's proposed deal with 9 universities. Conclusion: "Universities’ only proper response to this “compact”...is to offer absolutely nothing." Don't miss the speculation about why these 9--prestigious enough but potentially soft targets.

Some problems have simple solutions. This new “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education” is one. The answer is simply saying no.

Simple does not mean easy. But Brown, Dartmouth, MIT, Vanderbilt, Univ of AZ, UPenn, USC, UT Austin & UVA must understand what they’ll lose if they sign on.

shellyjlundberg.bsky.social
Looking at the 9 universities that have been asked to sign and wondering which promotion, manuscript, etc reviews I will be saying no to if they acquiesce. No free services to regime tools.
katestarbird.bsky.social
So much of academia runs on silent, collaborative service, requiring mutual goodwill to sustain it. That a few universities would sign letters to get them better deals w/ a corrupt administration… I don’t see how those universities survive in the long run. The rest of us just need to say no.
katestarbird.bsky.social
A moment that calls for collective action… to reject this transparent attack on academic freedom.

A mechanism to enforce fealty. An attack on academic freedom and democracy
