"America’s leadership in science & innovation depends on independent thinking & open competition for excellence. In that free marketplace of ideas, the people of MIT gladly compete with the very best, without preferences. Therefore, with respect, we cannot support the proposed approach."

"These values & MIT practices meet or exceed many standards [of the compact]. We freely choose these values... we live by them because they support our mission – work of immense value to the prosperity, competitiveness, health & security of the US. And of course, MIT abides by the law."
MIT does not sign compact We value free expression, as clearly described in the MIT Statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom. We must hear facts and opinions we don’t like – and engage respectfully with those with whom we disagree.
These values and other MIT practices meet or exceed many standards outlined in the document you sent. We freely choose these values because they’re right, and we live by them because they support our mission – work of immense value to the prosperity, competitiveness, health and security of the United States. And of course, MIT abides by the law.

The document also includes principles with which we disagree, including those that would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution. And fundamentally, the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone.

In our view, America’s leadership in science and innovation depends on independent thinking and open competition for excellence. In that free marketplace of ideas, the people of MIT gladly compete with the very best, without preferences. Therefore, with respect, we cannot support the proposed approach to addressing the issues facing higher education.

As you know, MIT’s record of service to the nation is long and enduring. Eight decades ago, MIT leaders helped invent a scientific partnership between America’s research universities and the U.S. government that has delivered extraordinary benefits for the American people. We continue to believe in the power of this partnership to serve the nation.

Sincerely,
Sally Kornbluth

Many think that the government is a problem, that social programs are abused by the few, and that taxes are a burden (neoliberal thinking that benefits the 1% from paying more taxes). Yet, during a shutdown many realize the positive roles that state capacity and government programs play in a society

As I told CNÑ, the US gov is partially closed but the aggressive ICE raids in public places continue and National Guard members are still being deployed. By actively cooperating with ICE and having highest arrest #s, TX&FL are weakening their economies & societies the most.

"Emergency Medicaid uses federal money to help match states’ payments to hospitals. That emergency money makes up less than 1% of Medicaid spending, which goes to people including immigrants with legal status as well as unauthorized immigrants." Caitlin Babcock.

"Who qualifies for this depends on each state’s standards for Medicaid eligibility & for what qualifies as an emergency."

drernestocast.bsky.social
“There’s a specific formula that is used, and the amount that the federal government pays varies across states, but both [federal and state] governments chip in to cover the cost of that emergency care,” says Laura Wherry, an associate professor of economics at New York University.

drernestocast.bsky.social
Hospitals can be reimbursed for these expenses through a program called Emergency Medicaid. The money – which includes federal dollars – covers emergency treatment for unauthorized immigrants who would have been eligible for Medicaid if not for their immigration status.

drernestocast.bsky.social
There are a few instances in which the gov does pay for unauthorized immigrants to receive medical treatment. Hospitals are legally required to provide people with emergency treatment, regardless of their ability to pay or their immigration status.

Republicans say Democrats won’t agree to a budget until they get health care for unauthorized immigrants. Here are facts related to the claim.
