Early chapters feel rushed, clearing space in crowded debates on hominization, language, and behavioural modernity. But it powerfully defends anthropology and centers forager kinship & myth in symbolic thought. Highly recommended.

Holy shit. So this just happened at Minneapolis's legendary First Avenue club. That's Tom Morello introducing Springsteen. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jHe...

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

A politics worthy of the term
Breaking News: Spain issued a decree allowing hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants to apply for legal residency. The measure is bucking a trend, as many Western governments have cracked down on illegal immigration.

A propos police "training" we published this extraordinary essay by Jessica Katzenstein in Cultural Anthropology only a couple of issues ago. A must read in these times

Takeaway: The mid‑range returns as an engine for collective transformation. Nearness = intensity, not distance. Territory emerges from logistics, attention, and care—this is an augural territory. THREAD END

Municipal services quietly referred urgent cases to community networks. Pantries added paperwork desks, mental‑health signposting, and “quality time” triage.

Hacks that mattered: IFEMA field‑hospital overstocks rerouted to neighborhoods; hundreds of beds saved from disposal; WhatsApp alerts synchronized bulk pickups.

*Prophetic organizing* = seeing what’s here and what’s ahead. Grassroots collapsed near/far with improvised corridors, storage, and transport that bent the city’s topology.

3- Intensification—new regimes of attention. Hotlines rang 9am–midnight; weekly check‑ins with 2,346 elders; home deliveries to avoid shaming queues.

2- Lamination—layering knowledges. La Prospe launched a volunteer “taxi” for discharged patients—pairing drivers, stair help, routes, and care without algorithms. In Moratalaz, networks mapped buildings without lifts and targeted isolated elders—anticipating where vulnerability would spike.

Three grassroots operations:

1- Decoherence—taking territory apart and refitting it to needs (e.g., La Piluka’s zoned grid and satellite depots).

Citywide tally: 63 pantries reached 13,222 families (~46,000 people), thickening the city’s mesh with ad hoc transport, storage, and distribution lines

Institutional aid often flowed to NGOs based in affluent districts. Meanwhile, community pantries reconfigured ground realities with agile, local infrastructures.

Surprise during lockdown: richer neighborhoods registered higher Covid incidence than poorer ones—an inversion of Madrid’s usual inequality map.

Grassroots logistics overlaid new corridors and “systems of attention,” temporarily reorganizing care, interdependence, and health across Madrid.

The mid‑range isn’t an administrative scale. It’s a heuristic—spatial intuition for what a territory can bear—testing nearness/distance to make collective life possible.

Case: La Piluka (El Pilar). A small pantry became a district‑scale operation—6 zones, 3 new depots, weekly routes—serving ~200 families amid fear of contagion and fines.

Lockdown “unbuilt” the city’s routines. Community networks stepped in—redrawing corridors of movement, attention, and support.

THREAD START 👇

AUGURAL TERRITORIES: How pandemic Madrid’s grassroots reinvented urban life by working in the mid‑range—the space‑time between near and far where logistics, care, and improvisation rewire territory.
