It's publication day for our first paper out of the www.csinequality.org lab completed entirely at NU. To write it, we asked: what research in the social psychology of inequality do we like and why do we like it? The answer is this paper:
natrevpsychol.nature.com
A functional approach to the psychology of inequality

Perspective by Michael W. Kraus (@mwkraus.bsky.social‬), Daniel J. Sanji, Megan E. Burns, Aline da Silva Frost, Iseul Cha-Ju, A. Chyei Vinluan, LaStarr Hollie & Cydney H. Dupree (‪@cydneydupree.bsky.social‬)

go.nature.com/4fMVfVV
a, An example of the deficit-based model of the psychology of inequality, in which psychological processes related to cognition, emotion and motivation influence desirable behavioural patterns that sort people and groups into different levels of resources and opportunities in society. b, An example of a functional model of inequality as domination and resistance. Psychological processes that arise from the structural context promote actions that either support and reproduce structures of inequality or dismantle those structures.

You may have noticed that folks who are from Chicago love this city. There's a reason for that. I walked to the lake with friends yesterday, and when I saw the waves rolling in, I felt something shift back into place inside of me. So many parts of this city are part of me. We will defend this place.

This #SPSP preconference 1st happened in January of 2016 when the area was 'emerging'. It's more arrived than emerging these days. I will talk about how to approach inequality scholarship (be it central or peripheral to your research question) from a functional perspective: rdcu.be/eBHv8

My latest is the story of how my community has rallied to protect and defend our neighbors in recent days, as ICE has targeted the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago. "This is not a story about a moment of victory, but a moment of being reminded of our power."
They Came for Our Neighbors. We Showed Up.
Before long, there were dozens, and then hundreds of people in the streets, watching and responding.

I hope that sounds as terrible to you as it does to me.

I do think some AI adoption would help researchers (where English is not primary) pub in English language journals. But that is a band-aid on an imperialism problem. 🤷‍♂️

mwkraus.bsky.social
Fourth, consider for a second, the uncritical adoption of "AI improves research quality."

Let's say all of us decide to run our reviews and editorial decisions through AI too. We can have a whole science where AI thinks up our research questions, analyzes our data, reviews our papers at journals..

mwkraus.bsky.social
Third, AI use is changing, so not sure years are comparable and certainly not sure it generalizes to adoption now. The word use identification strategy is not likely to hold up.

mwkraus.bsky.social
Second, paper quality is measured as journal IF. It's maybe the easiest measure to observe but a poor measure of paper quality. Productivity is number of publications... again more papers is not better research.

mwkraus.bsky.social
I read this paper bc, on the editor side, I see what i think is AI adoption. Interpret this result with some caution:

First, AI adoption is operationalized by an increase in specific words (not stated AI use). No way of knowing how many are in AI adopt/not groups incorrectly. It's not zero.

Does AI improve or undercut academic scholarship?

A new study finds that academics who use AI increased both the quantity & quality of their academic scholarship and it appears to reduces inequality (helping junior and non-english speaking scholars the most).

Social scientists have been arguing for decades that race and gender cannot be viewed through the teleological lens of progress, and never in my lifetime has that been more clear and important to understand than now.

UA Faculty Senate votes against proposed compact

In its Oct. 6 faculty senate meeting, faculty voted in favor of a resolution calling upon UA President Suresh Garimella and the Arizona Board of Regents to reject the proposed contract and any similar proposals "compromising the mission, values and independence of the University."

The vote passed 40-8, with one abstention. Faculty members raised several questions about how the university can find a path forward, whether leaders choose to sign the compact or not.
