First book of 2025 finished! We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer. Horror. Interesting read and I liked the ending.

I'm teaching an article I've taught 10 times before, so I tried comparing my discussion questions with ChatGPT's.

Some of them were just irrelevant, but mostly they were surface level ones you'd ask if you'd never read the paper. I'm so sad that some colleagues think this is acceptable pedagogy.

Feel like having a low-stakes book debate so how’s this for a kickoff: Fitzwilliam Darcy is just Ebenezer Scrooge with a bigger house and better timing.

Sounds like it’s the GOP that’s playing politics with people’s livelihoods. Hold the line, Dems.

We have an answer: With weekend voting nearly underway, Georgia's 10 biggest *blue* counties now represent 50.1% of all the votes cast so far in Georgia.

That's up from 48.9% two days ago. At the equivalent point in 2024, the number was 45.2%.
Something I’ll be watching this weekend: Weekend voting tends to skew Democratic, especially Sunday, so can Dems build up their advantage heading into final week of early voting?

If it’s the case that some Americans don’t have tea towels and pepper mills I’m gonna guess it’ll be because of dishwashers and eating out/takeaway. And if you don’t drink a lot of tea and eat out a lot, the need for a kettle reduces significantly.
This article is interesting mainly for blowing your mind as to how Americans don’t use the most basic of kitchen items like tea towels, a kettle, a pepper mill, etc 🤯
10 international kitchen staples most Americans haven’t caught on to yet
From French tea towels to Japanese knives, these international kitchen finds will make you ask: ‘Why don’t we have that?’

This is a new to me author and I picked up her book because I happened to see Naima Simone raving about it on FB and the title caught my attention. I love a messy, petty heroine and this book more than lived up to its title.

Basically, she goes to Miami to meet up with the guy she's dating but he

Can I please get some recommendations for romantic suspense novels, preferably with high heat? I asked for this on Twitter a long time ago but then I became a twitter quitter and never saved that list. So I’m hoping my #romancelandia friends can help. Here’s a pic of my cute puppy as thanks.

"They are coming for people just trying to get by. Landscapers, roofers, tamale women, Lyft drivers waiting in a lot at O'Hare, the people standing outside a Home Depot hoping that today might be better than yesterday."
ICE has been cracking down hard across the vast expanse of the greater Chicago area, and I wrote a little bit about what you need to understand about what it’s like here now. Plus, I compiled some resources for locals to get alerts and whistles. dansinker.com/posts/202…

get your money back from the nazi tattoo guy and give it to your local food bank
If you donated to Platner via ActBlue, you can get a refund!

Contact them NOW and ask for your money back!
I donated to his campaign. I was pissed off when it was revealed he worked as a merc, and debating what to do when the tattoo & queerphobic posts came out.

I contacted ActBlue, asked for it to be returned, got an acknowledgement of the return a few hours later; 2 days later it was in my account.

This is funny: one way to tell that openAI scraped YouTube, is that its Whisper transcription is biased toward transcribing inaudible or garbled text to "drop a comment in the section below" or "please like subscribe and share" and such

Notice how fast the billionaire stepped up to fund the military, but no one is stepping up to fund SNAP?

No one will step up to fight for a living wage, healthcare, disability supports or education.

They want to keep us down because it benefits them.

The billionaires will always stick together.

Great info in the thread!!
signs like these are up all over Chicago cafes and storefronts (here, cafes in Brighton Park and Back of the Yards) warning ICE not to enter without a judicial warrant

Better yet, don't use genAI for anything. Ethically speaking, there's even less excuse for using a plagiarism machine that burns more energy than some cities to do "trivial" shit than to do "important" shit.
Stop overrelying on "AI" for important shit. Like, honestly, stop using it for important shit at all, but definitely stop uncritically trusting it at the level of the GODDAM FEDERAL JUDICIARY.
Federal Judges— or staff, but same-same— used "AI" to summarize & draft rulings, issued them w/o checking the work, leading to basic factual errors, & thus undermining the facticity & validity of the rulings entire.

Lots more detail in here about this outrageous arrest. The guy has been in jail for weeks now for posting a quote by President Trump.
In the wake of Charlie Kirk's death, a TN sheriff had a 61-yr-old man arrested for posting a meme on Facebook, which the sheriff absurdly construed as a threat. It was pretty clearly bullshit but I dug into the case using FB & public records and now it looks even worse. My latest @theintercept.com:
The Absurd Prosecution of a Man Who Posted a Charlie Kirk Meme
Larry Bushart Jr. posted trolling memes on a Facebook thread about a vigil for Kirk. He’s been in a Tennessee jail ever since.

Among other things, the claim no border = no nation is just obviously false. Does Bernie think that the French, Germans, and Italians are no longer distinct people with distinct countries just because the border between them isn't enforced??? Can he be that stupid? Apparently so.
No, Bernie, sending squads of goosestepping fascists to conduct mass raids and terrify entire communities is not "better." This is a godawful take and you should feel bad.
