NEW: ProPublica went inside the detention center for immigrant families in Dilley, Texas.

Children held there told us about the anguish of being ripped from their lives in the United States and the fear of what comes next.

Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the Taínos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous

This is how the whole thing started.

Cañaverales, or sugar cane plantations, are a symbol of PR. They also dot the tropical Americas: fields of extractive labor for export to the north. Placing a cañaveral in northern Cali, bringing it into a field of extractive play, is absolutely marvelous.

to highlight the fact that species epithets can repeat in separate genera, here are three species named "yellow", three named "spotted", and three named "from India". it took a while to come up with a nice spread of lifeforms

i’m not particularly stickler-like in matters of diction but one thing i simply will not stand for is ‘ferment’ as a noun
RFK Jr on what he'll eat during the Super Bowl: "I am on a carnivore diet so I just eat meat and ferments, and I'm very happy with that. So I'm probably going to have yogurt."

The leading cause of death of Border Patrol agents is vehicle accident. You see them drive down here in the desert and you can tell why. I figure they’ve taken that tradition of reckless driving with them to Minneapolis.
There are so very many things that are fucked up about how things are in Minnesota right now and it is hard to tell what the outside world knows about.

The street blockades may seem odd . . . if you haven't seen the way ICE & CBP drive.

there's something about student protests/walkouts that makes me extra emotional
As El Paso students protest ICE operations, TEA threatens penalties for school walkouts
The Texas Education Agency has warned that school districts could face disciplinary actions, including a potential state takeover, for facilitating or encouraging student political walkouts.

CBP locates the surveillance infrastructure near populated areas in order to increase the physical strain on the human body and divert travel away from safety www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti..., drastically increasing the death toll of undocumented immigrants thehill.com/opinion/immi...
Worth noting that a lot of this surveillance infrastructure was funded and promoted by Democrats who framed it as a more humane alternative to Trump’s “wall”

The evidence suggests the “surveillance wall” actually lead to more deaths in the desert
Tech deployed at the border “includes everything from hyper-visible tethered aerostats — massive blimp-like detection platforms hovering thousands of feet over the desert — to stealthy devices like unattended ground sensors to detect footsteps, and license plate scanners disguised as traffic cones.”

we can't have people like this among us, let alone armed and in possession of an ostensible license to kill
ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.”

What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.
