Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but most of this money comes from donors, which means the donation are tax exempt as if the donations used to do coach buyouts were charitable giving.
This year, universities are giving $228 million to football coaches who failed at coaching football so that they won't coach football anymore.

It's overly simplistic to suggest this is money that would've gone to other university aspects like education and research b/c this is to some degree donor-funded and those donors care about football and not those other things. But it's still galling and grim to compare faculty and these parasites.
