My post was intended in jest, but in all seriousness, there are so many good games I haven't played across the last 40 years. If I were to completely stop playing new games I'd definitely miss out on good titles, as good games are being made all the time. But I'd never run out of stuff to play.

Shinji is advocating for the blue here despite being Japanese, so clearly you're not the only one!

I've become used to the orange now from buying Japanese games, but found it strange at first. Blue is so strongly associated with the console in my head thanks to our big chunky blue game cases.

I had to look up the character, but wow, that's really cute! Nice little nod.

Blue supremacy.

Had my Dreamcast out the other day and partner asked why the light is orange but the swirl is blue. Explained that the blue swirl was a change for Europe, and she immediately decided she wanted to change the LED to match and pulled out the soldering iron. Feels right. <3

Wanna feel old?

The Dreamcast released 10 years ago.

Haha, aw, mine doesn't see as much use anymore because I molded my PAL one so it plays Japanese discs, and it's easier than setting up a stepdown adaptor. But it's a lovely thing! When did you get yours? I think they're quite pricey now.

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

(I want one of those! Especially with the lil screen. But can't really justify I don't think)

I'll settle for a Lair remaster.

I already own:

Playstation 1 (old chunky grey lad)
Playstation 2 (original black European)
Playstation 2 (Sakura Pink Japanese)
Playstation 3 Slim
Playstation 4
Playstation 5

That's six consoles. I already own the full Playstation 6. I have no need of further additions to my squad. Sorry Sony.

I still can't quite believe it's a real video game you can buy after all this time.

Oooh, how is Silksong? I still haven't beaten the first Hollow Knight, but I played it nearly to the end, and am very keen to try the followup.

Yeah, like it's technically been a reasonable amount of time to start talking about a new console by the standards of any normal generation. But this generation has quite frankly been anything but normal. Really have my doubts that a lot of people will be ready for a brand new console in 2027.

Yeah, the Xbox is generally one of the cheaper consoles to collect for even now, but some of those Japan exclusive titles get pretty rough. So few copies of a lot of them out there, I guess.

That one's really fun! I never owned, but played a lot on a store display at my local game store when the Dreamcast was still on the market.

Food: I've been vegan for nearly a decade, and vegetarian for almost my whole life before that. So... uh... Pick one from your local meat aisle.

Movie: The Rise of Skywalker. Probably the most miserable cinema experience I've had as a big Star Wars fan.

Song: All Summer Long by Kid Rock.

Introduce yourself using only one food you refuse to eat, one movie you’ll never watch again, and one song you can’t stand.

Escargots. I can't even watch it.🤢

The House with Laughing Windows, really good but too bleak and harsh to watch it again.

Shape of You. Sorry, I'm tired (very) of it.

Mushy peas. Can't go near them.

James Cameron's Avatar. Couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

Butcher Pete, which I only know thanks to Fallout 3. Revolting song.

It looked interesting! And I like my weird Xbox oddities that actually take advantage of the console's additional muscle.

I notice there are dots between the letters of Steal. Does it stand for something silly? Please tell me it stands for something silly.

I think it really has gotten to the point for a lot of folk this gen where even if you wait, you're unlikely to be able to afford the hardware until it's completely irrelevant. Whereas I think it used to be the case for a lot of poorer folk that you could buy in midway through at a much lower price.
barleybap.bsky.social
Yeah, outside of maybe the Mega Drive where I was quite early, I've always bought into a new generation midway through at best. But I still wouldn't have a PS5 if I hadn't been given one, and while I could probably have budgeted for it, I have friends who literally can't afford one.
barleybap.bsky.social
I think most games that are seriously bleeding edge tech-wise have been current gen only for a while, but it really feels like up until this year, when releases began to slow down just a bit, it was pretty much a case of putting out anything that would run on PS4 as a dual release.
barleybap.bsky.social
I inherited a PS5 from a very kind friend this year after he upgraded to a Pro, but I remember weighing up just buying PS4 versions of Resident Evil 4 remake in 2023 and Visions of Mana and Persona 3 Reload as recently as last year. So it's not even just smaller titles - those are quite big games!
barleybap.bsky.social
Lads, lots of people still struggle to afford a PS5. Plenty of high profile games over the last few years have continued to launch as PS4 / PS5 dual releases. Yakuza Kiwami 3 is going to release on PS4 in 2026, a year before you're launching a console two generations forward. What are we doing here?
barleybap.bsky.social
On old consoles too! What else do you need?
