What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

More than half the CO₂ emissions of the Industrial Age have been pumped into the atmosphere since 1990.
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Literally nothing is 'carbon neutral'. It is a physical impossibility. If someone's telling you their product has zero climate impact, they're actively deciding to lie to you.

At some point, something actually has to change. Either Dems have to actually fight for the things they say they stand for, or their voters have to stop enabling them to attain power without feeling a responsibility to use it to advance that platform.

CEO-to-worker pay ratio today: 280-to-1

Trickle-down economics was always a sham.

Nothing has ever trickled down.

We gotta revive the ‘80s style family sitcom so we can have Very Special Episodes about sports gambling apps and letting AI talk you into eating a handgun and whatever else this evil ass culture is doing to kids. People my age still cut up plastic rings to save sea life, that shit 100% worked

Unvaccinated infants are the second most likely group to get hospitalized for Covid after older adults. Any effort to minimize the effectiveness for kids is evil.

It’s embarrassing that a major city like Chicago can’t figure it out
But *how* will they #PlowTheSidewalks? With what technology?

Keep calling. Ask for if any of your purchases are risking your credit card with the rules being enforced, and ask for clarity as to what is being blocked by the processor. But don't do it aggressively. Do it kindly, but firmly.
Morale at paypros call centers is in the toilet right now. It’s not just normal Black Friday stress, they’re being pounded. Corporate is pressuring bosses to end the paypros call campaigns. Source familiar w/ internals at MC stressed that folks should stand their ground but be kind to agents (1)

This is one of those places that are more majestic, evocative, moving, from a distance, as here. We did go inside and through (amid crowds), climbed up to top, the view was superb, but the glory is seeing it from a ways away. The imagination set free. San Gimignano is like that for me, too.

Thread

While at the time leaving academia was traumatic, I am now grateful I’m not having to navigate this stuff
I have been reading all the "students these days" threads from various sides and I have an essay's worth of thoughts -- there's a lot of complexity and heterogeneity that is hard to communicate on social media. There are a couple of things I will say here though. 1/
