Thanks everyone! It took me over a year to write, but I think you and/or your kid(s) will have many laughs together.
I do think I've observed in basically all creative fields that celebrity is dangerous, because really good craft takes time, and you just can't do it if you're doing nonstop interviews and articles and things. Like a lot of authors' second or third works feel generic/under-researched.
Put another way: at some point comedians go from laugh lines to applause lines. Problem is applause lines are easy and boring. Laugh lines are very hard. To my mind an ideal life as a writer or researcher is you do that sort of hard when you're young and a different (sustained) sort of hard later.

Have you noticed this thing where comedians, as they age, start moving from telling jokes to just complaining and editorializing? I wonder why. Possibly, if you have a 20+ year career you basically just no longer have relatable life experiences, so you go for applause instead of laughs?

Was listening to a Francophone podcast on the history of French antisemitism and learned about the "Rafle du Vel' d'Hiv'" mass arrest: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A9...

There's something about it being the local velodrome that gives it a creepy tangibility lacking in other similar stories.

Some guy orders a sex bot, sees it leaving the bedroom like this
Always important to remember that this is because these robots are "faking" being human

Theyre actually capable of way more and way weirder stuff

This is serious and important but also I love the thought of someone horny enough to turn to Zach Weinersmith for sexy fan art.

Hearing more and more stories about gig-work vanishing from artists in favor of AI. This was probably the low-hangingest fruit once you had pretty good image-gen AI, because it's often simple, not suuuuper creative work. But this sort of work is the backbone for a lot of arts careers.

TIL about Tolkien's best named character: tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Teleporno

Extra funny because even if you imagine he was innocent of pornography, he surely knew the Greek roots would indicate something like far-prostitute.
Teleporno
Teleporno is a Telerin name meaning "Silver-tall".

Hey medievalists, question:

So I once, on the bird site, got someone mad at me because I referred to "Anglo Saxon literature" as opposed to "Old English literature." The claim was that these people never called themselves Angles and Saxons, and that the usage was a later Euro-nationalist thing. BUT

So a lot of people are saying Google's space-datacenters idea is stupid, but have you considered that every time something like this gets proposed, I see an uptick in sales of my book on space?

So, there's this burgeoning movement that reminds me of Tolkien and Chesterton, in that it's a combo of conservativism (in the older non-populist sense of institution-preservation) with nationalism and Christianity. What I don't understand is how people like Thiel fit in?

Kind of grimly funny: Iona and Peter Opie were giants of research into children's literature and lore. They worked together for a long time, but he predeceased her by 35 years. A result of that appears to be an Amazon listing specifically for Dead Peter Opie
