“After I put on my bathing suit, you must not look at me until I get into the water.”

“Why not?” asked Frog.

“Because I look funny in my bathing suit. That is why,” said Toad.

Earlier this year, I interviewed Jacob Hurwitz, co-founder of American Trench. They mostly sell directly to consumers. To pay for the marketing, packaging, customer service, and other costs associated with retailing, Hurwitz says direct-to-consumer fashion models have to mark-up at least 3x.

This is how a $45 shirt becomes $90 and then $180. This 2x multiplying through the chain is called keystone pricing.

So why can't the brand just sell it to a consumer for $90, cutting out the retail markup? Because if they become a retailer, they will need to raise prices to cover their new costs.

The store is also in the business to make a profit. Their typical mark-up is 2x (many stores nowadays operate on 2.2x or 2.5x). This covers their cost of rent, utilities, maintenance, packaging, visual merchandising, fixtures, payroll, etc.

That means the consumer will pay $180 for the shirt.

In the clothing industry, the term CMT stands for "cut, make, trim." It means you are paying someone to cut, make, and trim the garment. Essentially, it's your manufacturing labor cost without taking into account the cost of material.

The CMT price for making a shirt in the US is about $35.

This is correct, in part - as the grim, military historian in me feels the need to note - it is psychologically much harder to get soldiers to open fire on people they view as 'respectable.'

And I dread, with grim increasingly certainty, that we are headed to a point where that matters.

protests against this government should include white Boomer grandmothers who meet for pilates class, get a pitcher of mimosas & walk together to the public space

we need people in the street who think everyone can talk their way out of a speeding ticket, they're key to winning

funny and accurate thread about trickery in dancing robot demos

it’s funny how it exploits our natural sense of empathy — “that thing that looks like me must also find the same things i do difficult”

and i do mean exploits

just like chatbots do

I'm laughing out loud because, *twenty years ago*, a friend in robotics told me that showing off a dancing robot is what you do when your robot sucks, and a *group* of them even more so.

I truly believe a big reason why Democrats are failing to appropriately respond to the moment is a pathological refusal to admit that there were aspects of the American status quo pre trump that were extremely fucked up and unjust

This would be GREAT paired with my article in doctors in the Klan in the 1920s.

New article out this month on how doctors become fascists.

50% of German physicians joined the Nazi Party––twice the proportion of any other profession. US doctors today are arguably the most conservative in the world, and we're heading along a similar path.

I think part of the derangement of things is the fact that every single member of the secret police knows that there is a decent chance that literally anything they do will be filmed and put on the internet. And if their face is showing, they'll be identified within minutes.

This is why the work of community watch groups is so important. It's not just capturing the faces of ICE agents, but also their vehicles. In Massachusetts we are already seeing them adapt and change their tactics in response to the work of community groups.

One of the things that I think the internal politics of ICE/CBP is probably grappling with and didn't quite get when all this kicked off is that the fact that the surveillance state could be turned back on the secret police in a way that makes it very hard for anything they do to be ignored.
