i think to use calibre you have to understand that it is entirely Outsider Programming and shit like this is just gonna happen

like previously we had "author of calibre is going to m maintain python 2.0, forever"

you go "ugh. okay" and then strip some DRM off a kindle book

The thing about gritting your teeth and going along with fascist demands is there is no end to those demands. Famously so. Fascism is bottomless, it is never satisfied, there is never a lack of an enemy to be punished, destroyed.

Do collaborators survive? Parts of them, I suppose.

None of us are stupid enough to think people and organisations didn't have their reasons for going along with any historic evil. Slavery, genocide, you name it. For them taking a stand may well have simply been suicide, personal or organisational.

It doesn't change what they are - collaborators.

If you deny your services to minority groups because your organisation would otherwise be destroyed by bigots, then you are a collaborator, a bigoted organisation with bigoted policy, and it is no longer important why you collaborated.

What would I rather you do? Be destroyed, frankly.

if you’d suggested I might even be contemplating typing “critical support for the Swoppies this one time” out for posterity a mere 6 months ago, we would’ve been having Words
It gives me great pleasure to inform you all that fascist streamer, Turning Point UK activist, and future Charlie Kirk re-enactor Young Bob got beansed again.

Since this post, nearly 300 of you donated about $11k and I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart. The union shared photos with me today of food being distributed. Remaining money will be evenly distributed among the 160 union members in the form of gift cards. Thank you. ❤️

AI nuclear winter can't come soon enough!

And the thing is the ML revolution already happened and these gigawatt datacenters are going to be just huge money pits:

Ms Phillimore promised she would sue me for this tweet, and raised over £37,000 for that purpose, but more than three months on, I am still yet to receive a letter before action from her.

Obviously I stand by my tweet.
A barrister, Sarah Phillimore, led a campaign of harassment of a trans woman so wicked that she sought to take her own life. Jk Rowling saw the threat of regulatory sanction for that misconduct and offered to pay her legal costs.

That's where she now is.

some charities really exist to support and further the efforts of the volunteers who do *all the actual work*.

some of these charities' trustees forget this and think the volunteers are employees they can tell what to do.

This is your occasional reminder that, if you like Neil Gaiman's stuff, but can't bring yourself to like it anymore for justifiable reasons, Tanith Lee is the author he is credibly accused of extensively cribbing from, and her work is on Audible, and AMAZING.

This is such a perfect description of every conversation I’ve been having lately
This is like asking me how I evaluate whether a popsicle operates by internal combustion. How I evaluate that is that I look at a popsicle and think "Self, is there any possible way that this thing could operate by internal combustion?" Then I think about what I know about a popsicle and say "No."

one more thing, and I've been saying this in my circles a bit...

the internet churns, content is rendered obsolete, if not replaced.

ALL ""ai"" output is samey, making it have a distinct trend.
Trends fade.

We've seen this many times over.

Everything Mike Masnick writes is this weird obsession with the idea that the reason the web "used to be good" is everyone owned their own servers etc.

He never really questions why that changed, or how the tech he champions will make it worse.

So. This has happened to me once, ever. A rogue uninstaller deleted the contents of my Documents directory - and this was fixed by a more sensible framework for installing/uninstalling stuff...

...in the 90s. This happened 30-ish years ago.

We know how to not do this. Just don't use this nonsense.

Anyone who thinks AI is capable of responding the breadth of human experience has a deeply limited and honestly offensive view of humanity.

Truely that list of contributors is just a list of people who absolutely should know better, but might just have mild AI psychosis.
unfortunately, this paragraph of the manifesto is not correct in any way whatsoever.

no existing thing sold as "AI" does this at all. the marketers lie that it does, and then it doesn't.

anyone signing this manifesto, ask them for the software that does this.
