At what point is “I don’t know” or “I haven’t heard about that” an unacceptable response from our political leaders?

Anyway, Johnson knows exactly what’s going on and why.

REPORTER: We know the president moved forward with mass layoffs. We're also learning there were significant cuts to staff at special education services. Are you comfortable with those cuts?

MIKE JOHNSON: I haven't seen the specifics of that and I don't know

That apparent power has, again and again, proved vulnerable to human qualities less measurable than bombs and dollars: moral fervor, determination, unity, organization, sacrifice, wit, ingenuity, courage, patience.

---Howard Zinn

The struggle for justice should never be abandoned because of the apparent overwhelming power of those who seem invincible in their determination to hold on to it. 1/2

Fixing by destroying - same way they fixed USAID, CDC and are working to fix Dept of Education and the US scientific and research & development enterprise

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

Cutting funding to educate and support children with disabilities so we can bail out Trump’s buddies who invested unwisely in Argentina
sarapartridge.bsky.social
There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

The animal rescues are overflowing with dogs and cats. Many are offering free or very reduced adoption fees bc they are overwhelmed. Is this the economic canary in the coal mine for middle and working class families - dropping a pet bc they can’t afford basics like utilities and groceries?

Ugh. I just heard about a different solar project being cancelled last night. Imagine being such a petty anti-intellectual tyrant that you’d rather make nearly 3,000 people continue living without electricity than let them install solar panels and battery storage.
A tribe in Arizona planned to connect 600 homes to electricity. Then the funding was cut
The Hopi Tribe received a multimillion-dollar federal grant to install solar panels and battery storage systems for hundreds of homes. But the Trump administration has canceled the funding.

SCOOP: The Bureau of Land Management says the largest solar project in Nevada — the Esmeralda 7 mega-farm — has been canceled

The news was quietly dropped via a sudden website update with no public word from any of the companies involved or a statement from the agency

It would have delivered a gargantuan 6.2 gigawatts of power.

In addition to this being a brilliant response, does it not occur to Shapiro that asking AI to produce a scene transition isn't going to produce anything novel or creative? The 10 ideas AI generates are drawn by averaging 100s of existing scene transitions (including poorly done transitions)

SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

I am doing a panel intro today. I really don't want to recite their bio - everyone already has the bio (from the program & website). I now do 1-2 lines from the bio & then note a recent, relevant publication. If the audience is really interested in the panelist, go read / cite their work!

We did a cute promo for library card month with Tempe Public Library and Arizona Roller Derby. Their head librarian is a former skater and our league boasts quite a few librarians (academic, public, & symphony based). Derby + library are a natural pairing!

Excellent thread on doing the right thing / being an ethical and moral actor in complex times.

I was once a person who wanted to do good but harmed instead. I was once a person who wanted to do good but did not because I feared the personal consequences.

I think a lot of people struggle with pragmatism on one hand and leading an ethical life with integrity on the other.

I'm sorry but the more I think about it the more bothered I am about this whole concept of choosing whether or not you can be a good person is it different for other people do you just get to choose whether you're flexible uncertain things how can you live that way?

This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will. It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will.

Each week I remind students that printing the readings & highlighting + taking notes on the page will help them learn, remember, and better engage in discussion. A few have taken this approach - hard to discern if their performance is better for it or high performers took my advice

For years republicans have shut down government or held it hostage for months at a time w/continuing resolutions. Today GOP controls all three branches & Dems are lined up to take the blame for a "potential" shut down caused by GOP incompetence & self destruction. Dem leadership is so bad at this!
