There's been an avalanche of new sign ups, so it's time for reintroductions.
Hi. I'm Andrew. I am a deep-sea ecologist and conservation technologist. My work orbits around how humans use and misuse technology to explore, exploit, protect, and plunder the hardest to reach places on the planet.

This seems like a good idea, really. So! "Tweety Fish" is my (auld) hacker handle; I am in the Cult of the Dead Cow. I have a PhD in vision science, I apply it to machine learning. I had a startup trying to make autonomous cars less bad for pedestrians (didn't work; they're bad) but now am free.

not to be all "oh yeah well what about the OTHER awesome old timey-sounding '70s canadian shipwreck folk song" but if you pay attention to the lyrics of "The Mary Ellen Carter" it is surprisingly detailed and precise about marine insurance underwriting and drysuit salvage operations
Ok I had no idea the Edmund Fitzgerald was a contemporary thing for the song, this is like his Toby Keith 9/11 song but about transporting taconite pellets

this man show sequel is really going some interesting directions, I like how they're exploring the logical consequences of the worldbuilding

In my old town the GOP had run basically without serious challenge for decades. A bunch of us "millennials" joined the local Dem party and basically asked to help.
We were running it in a year. Within 4 years we had a majority of town seats flipped Dem. A FAR more progressive Dem than old party

“Rather than taking over the Democratic Party the same way the right took over the Republican Party, we should take the easier route and just start up a new party ourselves!”
I’m about to fill my pockets with stones and walk into the sea.

Once again have to give props to Mina Kimes for having a nice football scene on here simply by going up to people she knows and being like “hey join Bluesky you jerk!” It really is sometimes as simple as that.

Charli’s team-up with the Music For A New Society hitmaker will surely cement her megastar status
John Cale has made a record with someone who wasn't even born when he made Songs For Drella, which for most artists would count as a late-career recording, but for him... long may he roll, is what I'm saying.

there was an incredibly stark change at my job between 2023 and 2025. just absolutely day and night.
i dont think there’s ever been a point where corporate america has had a sincere sense of morality but it is probably a sign of the times that the culture at most major firms does not even pretend to encourage ethical behavior anymore. the transformation is really stark in tech.
i honestly do not know what major company in america isnt involved in some ghastly shit at this point? i just would not *do* the ghastly shit yourself.

Also to be clear: I do not respect the Senators who voted yes tonight, and their careers in public service should end. They do not understand the stakes of this moment and continue to treat the GOP like a partner in dealmaking and not a fascist threat to the country.
I've made my position very clear tonight that I think the healthcare fight is too important to leave to a "maybe" future vote but this is absolutely right.
And it's why blame MUST be placed first and foremost on the GOP and their merciless hostage-taking.

From a political point of view, I don't think the Dem management of the shutdown endgame has been good, but it is worth remembering there are real costs (RIP my mentions).

Angry as I am with Hassan, Shaheen, et al., the GOP is trying to deny SNAP payments to recipients and to block states' efforts to pay them. They are literally determined to starve the people they see as undeserving.

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.
The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.
People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.
And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

here's the first video on the new channel, it's about the team that ACTUALLY invented the Tush Push years before the Eagles, so you can appropriately thank them or yell at them depending on whether you think the Tush Push is good (correct) or bad (wrong)
