Music, comics, assorted grousing, he/him. CURRENT THINGS are Discourse 2000, a 2000AD blog and Popular, about the UK’s No 1 hits. I also waste my time (and maybe yours!) with @peoples-pop-polls.bsky.com

A new #Discourse2000 post - DAN DARE is back, and he's here to tell #2000AD readers "we have Star Wars at home". Plus horror in space and the unspeakable menace of - THE SNAPPERS!

Both these borrow from the ur-text that is STRONTIUM DOG: THE KILLING
He’s spectacularly lacking in self-awareness

Some interesting factional splits in the NME’s albums of 89 - the Proper Music faction holding stronger than I remember with Lou, Van & the Neville Brothers. I pored over this endlessly though did not recall the N-bomb in the NWA entry @bestalbumbrackets.bsky.social
I'm certainly not arguing that a popular vote would produce the right result, but even contemporaneous lists ranked it highly.

My vote made this 50-50 which bodes well IMO

I’m mostly here to talk about music, books, and comics, and those things are being threatened by “AI” to zero benefit so I’m getting more against it by the day
Is this platform still massively against AI or has it moved more towards acceptance?

Dealing with #TheTwen2ie5 withdrawal by posting my 45 extra HMs, if you nominated one of these bangers good for you!

Aliens, The Yeti: appear in Tintin, probably real

Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, Chupacabra: no Tintin appearance, fake
New polling on aliens
% of U.S. adult citizens who believe the following definitely or probably exist:
Aliens 56%
Bigfoot 28%
The Yeti 23%
The Loch Ness Monster 22%
Chupacabra 16%

#EoD Edge Of Darkness Part 4 - back on form after the slightly wheel spinning 3; oddness creeping in at the edges. Must be one of the first hacking scenes in a British thriller complete with “we’re in!”

Whizz-kid - amazing that “half this comic hates the other half” worked so well as a gimmick
Whizz-kid or Chip-ite?

Sorry, sorry, nothing's happening except 100 Gecs
And men are writing entire books saying nothing’s happening! Come on

Doing this challenge made me firm up what I like about the 2020s and realise more than ever that people who think current music has stagnated are just weird. Surges of creativity across Africa, Asia and South America; a golden generation of women pop stars; tons of funny, filthy rap - good times!
#TheTwen2ie5 Day 50

1. CHAPPELL ROAN - “Good Luck, Babe!” (24, USA) - 12 POINTS

How do you do fellow normies? First time I heard this I thought “that chorus is like Dragostea Din Tei (derogatory)” but NOW I think “that chorus is like Dragostea Din Tei (complimentary)”

RIP Jimmy Cliff, a sweet voiced man. Can't imagine I'm the only person who clicked with reggae thanks to the Harder They Come soundtrack

Got my draft HMs list for #TheTwen2ie5 - it's 64 long so a bit of trimming required, but all the really huge pop stars are there: Sabrina, Billie, Lana, Caroline...

#TheTwen2ie5 Day 49

2. FIONA APPLE - “I Want You To Love Me” (20, USA) - 11 POINTS

Best love song of the decade etc etc, also she really wallops the piano in this, Chas (or Dave) would be proud

“when 2000AD is sold to Robert Maxwell’s Fleetway in 1988, it’s reportedly selling about 100,000 copies a week”

One thing I think that is interesting in this era is that also was the circulation of Transformers: UK, which probably explains a lot about some of us

#Discourse2000 is back! This intro post sets the scene for the 1978 posts with an overview of the different tribes of early #2000AD creators - the professionals, the rebels, the fans and the outsiders - and their visions of what the comic is

This song is another bit of evidence for my growing belief that the greatest legacy of post-punk was teaching British indie bands about basslines (a lesson often forgotten since mind you)
