I looked down the nested quotes and thought that was the point of the prompt! World events that loomed large in your childhood.

I had stuff I was into throughout - music, D&D, sci-fi, books - but I dunno that an isolated "event" really applies to any of them

I don't think there's ever been an event where the books it launched are so good - JLI, Suicide Squad, the Baron Flash and Perez Wonder Woman - and it's wild that the actual comic is such a nothing

A neighbour whose kids I played with was sent out there with the Navy so my parents kept coverage and conversation to a minimum, I suspect cos they were against it but didn't want me to say to my friend "hope your Dad's OK, mine thinks it's all pointless"

**One of the first ongoing news stories I remember is the 1980 coverage of the Polish Solidarity movement, so them coming back in 1989 just as I turned 16 really felt like a "closing the book on the decade/my childhood" thing
