Bad Pacifist, passable writer.

Meritocracy is a myth. Tolerance is a peace treaty, not a suicide pact. American was never great, but it's over now.

Bari Weiss is bad at journalism, which everybody has known for a long time, but today proved that she's also bad at laundering propaganda, which is far more important for the people who gave her the job.

Remembering fondly the days when The Free Press under Bari Weiss would nobly refrain from running a story smearing a professor for overwokeness when that professor refused comment.

also, these "WAR" values (a) are derived from a statistical model that produces ideologically convenient results that no other open-source model replicates, (b) lack controls for important factors like fundraising and candidate experience, and (c) completely ignore uncertainty in the data. not good!
it is one thing to say "here is what our measurements tell us about the playing field," it is something very different to leap from that to "and here is why we have a better understanding of your specific circumstance and your particular electorate than you, the person who represents the district"

It was such a joy to celebrate Hanukkah with Mandy, Kathryn and their son, Gideon. As Jewish New Yorkers across our city prepare to light candles and mark the seventh night today, I wish you and your families a Hanukkah full of light and love.

The ideal electeds win by the lowest margin possible while still maximizing policy goals. The goal in politics isn't to run up the score on your margin at the expense of doing nothing in office.
Biden ran a point and a half ahead of House Dems generally. But more relevant: you know what winning a seat by 13 points instead of 8 points gets you? Absolutely nothing. Even if Casten traded away a few points he didn't need anyway in order to go further on whatever issue, that's rational behavior!
when we said “defer electoral strategy to the actual politicians running for actual offices” we meant “after calculating wins above replacement somehow”

We don't know what will happen in the next 11 months, but Dems in states with GOP statehouse gerrymanders need to realize that this might be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I'm pretty sure that at this point in time, the remaining opposition to renewables are nothing but the tantrums of those with interest in fossil fuels and/or could not get the logic of "there's no cost to obtaining the fuel" to sink into the brain.

So much of the discussion around AI would be vastly different if it was built and marketed around what it excels at (an extremely potent tool to augment human work) and not as something that can *replace* that human labor

NEW: A bill restoring money for pediatric cancer therapies was defeated in the Senate.

I think there’s some unproductive AI-Luddism (colloquial usage, you know what I mean, don’t be annoying), but also it’s extremely obvious where it came from and AI companies share a large portion of the blame with how they’ve framed things.

It me.

Conservatives are very vocal about what they want. Most don't even try and couch it in the "economic anxiety" bullshit you see published.

The *ONLY* conservatives that do that are the ones who are talking to "liberals" who are easy marks.
i was especially struck by these paragraphs, which rang very true to me. libs who grew up around conservatives aren't embarrassed to be liberals--or confused about what conservatives want. there's a certain kind of elite media man, on the other hand--

The translation is they have the "Dish room Shits"
