BTW, this is my big weekly football roundup. It’s also got entries about Alabama, Arch, trick plays and weird rules. And you can get it in your inbox every Monday for free

The greatest coach in NFL history took a college job. The idea was that his schematic superiority and legendary discipline would instantly outclass unsophisticated opponents in a second-tier sport.

and then...
he lost his first game...
BY THIRTY FOUR POINTS
They hired Bill Belichick for THIS?!?!?
Is this your GOAT? (Plus, Arch Manning, calling Paul Finebaum, and the highlight that made me change my national championship pick.)

by losing three whole regular season games they experienced enough adversity to buy into the "nobody believed in us" narrative for the rest of the season

we are now getting fewer shots of Taylor Swift per Chiefs game than shots of Anthony Becht watching Rocco Becht at the Iowa State-Kansas State game in Dublin, the pendulum has swung too far
rodger.bsky.social
feels like at this point TV networks have overcorrected and are now showing too few shots of Taylor Swift watching Travis Kelce

i think about this fake punt all the time. also in the titans' next preseason game this guy repeatedly punted the ball off the Cowboys' new jumbotron and then they cut him. he never played in a regular season game but had the most impactful preseason of any punter of all time

The Chiefs going 12-0 in one-score games last year and 0-3 this year is a clear omen the gods have abandoned them. It should be treated the same way ancient peoples treated solar eclipses and floods. They must sacrifice Harrison Butker at sunrise to rid themselves of evil

no they just defined this really weirdly
A “T-Formation Quarterback” is defined as a player aligned one yard or less behind the snapper.
rodger.bsky.social
the Bears would NEVER make this mistake
rodger.bsky.social
in fairness to the refs, the rulebook does kinda repeatedly say this is illegal, it's not like you have to go specifically to the 1940s section of the rulebook to find this
It is also an illegal shift if a T-Formation
Quarterback goes in motion and fails to
come to a complete stop for at least one full second before a second player goes in motion.

i thought this too, but the rulebook also defines any QB lined up within a yard of the snapper as a "t-formation qb"
rodger.bsky.social
the rule on quarterbacks under center not being able to go in motion is so obscure and ancient that it literally uses the phrase "t-formation quarterback"
T-Formation Quarterback. It is legal for a T-Formation Quarterback to go in motion, whether he has placed his hands under center, on his knees, or on the body of the center. However, it is a false start if the action is quick and abrupt. If the player fails to come to a complete stop for at least one full second prior to the ball being snapped, it is illegal motion.

just noticed that NBC stopped putting their analysts' season-long SNF picking record on the show, presumably because of all my tweets about how bad Chris Simms was at picking games straight-up
ESPN analyst picks
Jac: 7-6
Rodney: 7-6
Florio: 7-6
Maria: 8-5
Simms: 4-9
Mike: 8-3
Tony: 7-6

using that Big Ten private equity money to immediately get rid of a guy they didn't like, don't worry about it
rodger.bsky.social
To be clear they started the program in 2021, he’s not 117 years old
rodger.bsky.social
looks like he was literally on their first team in school history, pretty wild he made the league

Kenpom projecting the Phoenix to go 10-19 this year, huge improvement

Still think this is one of the funniest (derogatory) things a college football coach has ever done
And in a podcast released by the school itself, Dilfer sat down with Ingram, the UAB AD, and gave a recruiting pitch for the University of Louisville’s volleyball program, where his daughter plays. When Ingram gently pushed back and said volleyball recruits should also consider UAB, Dilfer weirdly doubled down, saying “they’re pulling from different buckets”—essentially, that he should be allowed to hype Louisville’s program over UAB’s because Louisville’s recruits are so much better that they’d never consider UAB. Thanks, Trent, that fixes everything.

I just hope UAB goes back to being a solid G5 program and that hiring Dilfer didn’t single-handedly derail the programs entire trajectory
