Still grumbling
Over the years I've cultivated some weirdly specific Christmas season traditions.

I've been getting my tree on Black Friday since like ~2015. But now the night that I string up the lights must be capped off with watching National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

It’s so hilarious how Mamdani has broken the brains of the Chamber of Commerce crowd. My grandfather was a small business owning Eisenhower Republican and he would have been 100% in favor of all of this.
Soon small businesses won’t have to wait for Small Business Saturday to get attention from their Mayor.

Some changes that they can look forward to:

Headline: "AI can replace 11.7% of workforce"

Actual study: Anthropic paid MIT to use a "labor simulation tool" that said 11.7% of TASKS could be done by AI
MIT study finds AI can already replace 11.7% of U.S. workforce
Artificial intelligence can already replace 11.7% of the U.S. labor market, across finance, health care and professional services, according to MIT's study.

The number of use cases for AI is inversely proportional to the amount of actual work you do
A study by Dayforce shows 87% of executives use AI for work, compared to 57% of managers and just 27% of employees.

I think this explains the massive disconnect we see in how CEOs talk about AI versus everyone else. It also raises the question of how useful it truly is for frontline work?
Execs are embracing AI more than their employees are, new research suggests
Research from HR software company Dayforce suggests that executives are leaning into AI far more than their employees.

a few candidates have talked about this but any Dem planning to run in 2028 should make it explicit: the next DOJ will, in fact, go after you if you’re funding this awful ballroom, or any other pay to play deals you make with this administration
Dimon on why JPMorgan Chase is not funding WH Ballroom:
We have an issue, which is anything we do, since we do a lot of contracts with governments here and around the world, we have to be very careful how anything is perceived, and also how the next DOJ is going to deal with it.

I can't recall who coined the term (I think it might have been @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social ??), but the phenomenon of "stumble upon" culture is something that is sorely missed. Many of my favorite novels have been found by my just aimlessly browsing the stacks at local bookstores.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Idk if it's Nike's doing or if her team is just giving bad feedback, but all of this Clark merch thus far has been hot garbage. 3 star Etsy merchants create better graphic designs than this.

Nothing says “freedom” like putting international students through an authoritarian tribunal for the crime of wanting to learn.

What an embarrassment and betrayal of higher education’s central ideals.

There is no way to read these agreements, at a moment when the presidency is so obviously both lawless and unpopular, other than a willful collaboration by university administrators who see utility and purpose in the overreach by a flailing fascist government.
BREAKING: Northwestern University has agreed to pay the U.S. Treasury $75 million, over the course of three years as part of an agreement with the federal government to restore funding and end investigations into the university
