Frozen turkeys have ice which means they have water. When you lower a frozen turkey into hot oil, the ice quickly turns into steam. The steam expands and pushes the oil out of the pot and onto the open flame.

This is bad.
There is a post circulating on Bluesky encouraging the moving of a frozen turkey straight into a pot of hot oil. We are combating this misinformation the best way we know how - through the power of dance music.

Every day there's a headline like "President's fire safety officer says we're going to set everything on fire and if you think that's bad you're woke"
Unreal: "The EPA is moving forward with approvals for pesticides containing 'forever chemicals' as an active ingredient... The agency also announced plans to relax a rule requiring companies to report products containing PFAS and has proposed weakening drinking water standards for the chemicals."

And another thing: I'm mad. Please put it in the newspaper that I got mad. I am not ashamed of my emotions, which I believe are a normal and human reaction to events, and I welcome a frank and open discussion of why I feel that way, and possible paths forward.

it is very much Lovecraftian cosmic horror bc the horror isn’t something “scary” as much as an sense of deep violation upon the contemplation of a sexual act between a woman and a strange creature from New England that non-ironically hates human lives
has anyone pirated the Eldritch Horror post yet

The “google is using your email to train AI” debacle is imo most instructively seen as tracer dye for multiple failures: many people are instinctively skeptical of tech companies now; and many outlets that should have had experts able to cogently weigh in and go “wait a minute” simply don’t anymore.

this is like when that screenwriter asked AI to write a screenplay, and all it did was ask him for more time to complete it. Took a while before he figured out that it wasn't a complex task; "need more time" was the predicted response to "write a screenplay"

Season 6 of buffy is without a question my favorite season of television because I have never watched a season of television with that level of self-loathing before and it speaks to me at a visceral level
this is especially true of the last two seasons, where the show seems to hate the audience, its cast, and life in general

“Luke learns design” month, (cheat) day #21:

Star Trek 1971!

In 1971 a high school kid wrote a game on punch tape about hunting Klingons. In 1972 he rewrote it in HP BASIC, and it became briefly the most distributed software of all time. The code is still available.

So I ported it! Check it out!

On top of how ridiculously invasive this is, the sheer number of distinct things they are testing reeks of p-hacking to me.

If you test every possible thing that could be wrong with something without adjusting for the number of tests you're doing, you'll end up finding SOMETHING by pure chance
The “Pathways” trial is, IMO on more than one level, a thoroughly unethical piece of “research” to be carrying out on children, especially children who are part of a marginalised minority.

(government minister reading a report on the thousandth clinical drug trial of a pill that eliminates poverty, with a 100% success rate, that generates 10 times the value it costs to produce & makes government ministers public heroes) I don't understand, so the poor are made to suffer how, exactly?
There has literally never been a universal basic income trial program that didn't deliver real and measurable results above and beyond any other form of social welfare, and every time another concludes with the same findings the powers that be go "interesting! Anyway," and pretend it wouldn't work.
