I think the challenge people have with the book re: horror, is that the story peels back the menace of Dracula until we see what he really is. A dangerous but frail pest

"LTCs on ketamine" oh nooooo
uticaeric.bsky.social
No one counts their Multiple on Invested Capital in the Army,

but SV investors do.

It’s a major feature of performance.

You’d think you’d want an aligned culture / accountability structure.

Instead you’re just going to have LTCs on Ketamine.

anyways shout out to a real fiend, Lord Ruthven. He is the apex predator Dracula pretends to be. Everything he does is by his own wits
aelkus.bsky.social
e.g the fact that he was titled nobility saved him, not that he was a vampire

dracula was incredibly lucky because they could have probably destroyed him if they all rushed the castle at once. i assume that there was probably some political limitation on this

The only truly rational people in the whole book are the ostensibly “primitive” Transylvanian peasants who effectively protect themselves from Dracula’s predations. The English characters have no similar cultural antibodies to guard them.

I feel like Johnathan Harker is the most underrated character in the book. He's the only character that survives Dracula alone and without preparation. Him being ultimately scared by the experience helps keep Dracula a true threat. Adaptations that make him a weenie do the character a disservice

The Memorex VIS: It's CD-ROM ON YOUR TV!
An ad from the Tiger Electronics Catalog demonstrating the Video Information System's "32 Bit technology," promising a complete game console and 20 game titles free for $99.00. The image on the right shows Links, a then popular FMV golf game, but the list of games on the left is nearly total eduatainment.

i really do feel as well that if the texan was lucy's suitor the novel would have just ended there. dracula would just go home immediately
aelkus.bsky.social
the moment this changes and a group of people want to kill him, his pointy eared ass skedaddles home
aelkus.bsky.social
the novel is very good at showing that dracula is a glass cannon. not being awake for half of the day is really a hazard. there are all of these smaller limitations on his power that add up. his advantage is mostly that no one is aware of who he is and what he's plotting
aelkus.bsky.social
which makes jonathan harker's real estate deal so dangerous. he's given dracula an escape route
aelkus.bsky.social
there's so many subtle details in dracula (the novel). one of the major hidden ones is that dracula is contained in his castle by the transylvanians at the start of the novel. he's hemmed up there. he can't really travel freely even in his own country

Again, it is worth keeping in mind when comparing the rate of discoveries that public funding for medicine and the sciences is orders of magnitude larger than for the humanities. We work slow in part because we work on a shoestring.
A pie-chart of federal research funding, using 2023 figures. The funding slices for the NIH (83%) and NSF (17%) are so large that the slices for the NEH and NEA round to 0%.

@andrewfarago.bsky.social interviewed people who worked on MOTU for his book on Saturday morning cartoons, and they were very cool, but of all the things that was Just a Job, it was the just a jobbest. At one point they competed to see if they could make a whole episode out of recycled animation.
