I really think at its heart philosophy is one giant battle, taking place over many eras and nations, between people who are basically pleasant bureaucrats and people who are sexy murder poets, and it’s both super important and super boring that the pleasant bureaucrats must win.

have we considered that there's some underlying factor that causes both good at winning + bad at governing?

as i typed it out i thought "I fear the factor might be "disregard for the truth""....

(not that this nails sir kier's central pathology per se...)

Maybe people just haven't heard about Mahmood's plan to have Sir Kier personally punch every asylum seeker in the face? That's probably why Labour are third.

the new world may have been struggling to be born but the old world was very much alive at that point. no one I can identify thought that the military campaigns launched by the Nicholas II or the public works projects of Louis Napoleon were smokescreens to drum up ad revenue in the paper or whatever

I feel like this is at least partially owed to the fact that after 14 years of Tory rule, the two have become conflated in people's heads, and especially in those of people in politics. to them, a Proper British Politician just has to govern badly in this particular fashion of managerial evil

I feel like there's also a version of this point to make about elites - this is actually the thing I find so odd about Labour. it seems like they clocked that the right was Good At Winning Elections, but then beat them in an election and then decided to imitate the Bad at Governing parts

Excellent policy, and comprehensible explanation. I disagree with a LOT of people on here, and sometimes learn from them. But if they consistently make me angry we're a bad match.
If on multiple occasions you give a kinda angry response to a post of mine I am blocking you and that is for both our benefit. You don't need to see my takes I am not someone who matters. You can be free now.

But what if that is the point?

Make government a clownocracy so that the state can't function and statist reformism (like 20c democratic socialism) can't work, so that the oligarchs can loot? 😝

I genuinely think this (from: sootyempiric.blogspot.com/2025/08/woke...) is going to be lots of people's unironic take on these years. I do think Woke 2 will be a thing, and I don't think this was inevitable but rather the result of very bad strategic choices being made by the right and centrists.

i also cannot help but feel this must be partially a problem of education. (I mean this seriously, i think part of why australia is more protected is that we have a much better K-12 education system). but i also see many educated people tying themselves in knots to deny what they obviously know.

Very progressive of you to actually release the ranking giving the top few a couple of moments of relief before they realize how much they have to lose, as opposed to the traditional method of letting everyone be equally worried they might be the ones at the bottom.

I feel like much of this is actually down to the systematic gutting of their mainstream left/centre-left opposition, both from the inside and outside. They do way worse when they're up against actual competent, charismatic competition.

This is all a variation on the media's evolution into deluding themselves that presenting both sides of a debate is the way to avoid accusations of bias, then presenting an astronaut and a moron who is high on shrooms as their two, equally qualified and valid, debaters.

Released my new ranking of graduate students today. I think my assessment criteria were rigorous but fair. Hoping it inspires everyone to engage in even more obsequious quiet desperation for approval from me that they will fundamentally never quite be good enough to feel fully secure in.

Gonna be interesting to see how the various liberal (global definition) factions in American politics respond to suddenly joining an enormous and paradoxical popular front coalition as we near 2028.

Annoying feature of contemporary Right Wing Insaneosphere is that it is very bad at governing, even on its own terms it is just extremely bad at making the machinery of state do things in any reliable fashion, but actually rather good at winning elections.
