One of my more conspiracist opinions is that desiring alternatives to degrowth to be unthinkable was part of the driving force for/tolerating closing nuclear power plants even before coal ones and that this did enormous damage to public perception of fighting climate change.
More people in Europe die of heat than Americans die of gunshot wounds. This isn't to excuse American gun culture.

However, this underscores how much the "AC is just a needless power-sucking luxury" mentality is killing a lot of people.

if i had told anyone ten years ago that we would have self-declared luddites and people saying that they'd rather not cure cancer if our automation is so good that humans cannot experience the joy of doing science it would have been considered laughable hysteria

i remember windows 98. it was an amazing technological achievement, a marvel that keeps seeming like it'd be less likely to have happened whenever i look at it again. i would obviously not want to use it again bsky.app/profile/cdro...
Really loving the replies on that “Gen Z likes old tech” story along the lines of “Windows 98 was the peak of Windows”. It bluescreened so often there was a way to make Windows try to keep hobbling along post-BSOD. Win98 wasn’t great! Your nostalgia is lying to you!

I have an Ayn Rand sub-agent that lives in my head that doesn't ever come out except for statements exactly like "We should hold off on curing cancer to protect jobs"
this is from a neurips panelist

i wish him all the compassion and selflessness he shows towards those with cancer

seeing a machine do something that you previously thought was unique to your cognition, and opening up that capability to anyone, is to many people a deep narcissistic injury. this explains much about the social environment

Short essay summing up my thoughts about a thread from a while ago about the weight the word 'respect' can have. I'm pretty convinced that this is such a specific use of the term that it amounts to a separate dialect of English that people either are or aren't familiar with.

because jung is about mystical quests and freud is about how fucked up you are
i don't know how the right ended up with jung and the left ended up with freud
Carl Jung isn't exactly LESS full of shit than Freud, but he's admittedly full of shit in a much more entertaining way. "Guy who's basically a practising wizard but gets super annoyed if you point that out and loudly insists he's a Man of Science" is a type of guy you don't see much of these days.

the natural endpoint of politicians all becoming terminally online is that this will not be worthy of a headline in the future

i think my most crank belief is that project plowshare was awesome and we should have done basically all of this stuff
If we’re talking nuclear weapons can we mention the insane proposal to use nukes to drain the Great Lakes in like five minutes to power a giant missle defense laser
bro they invented the Fat Man Launcher from Fallout

Just in: Donald Trump has decided to let Nvidia export its advanced H200 chip to China. The US president also said other chipmakers would be allowed to export advanced semiconductors. on.ft.com/3YeeD6f

Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring :
There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
And drinking largely sobers us again.

imo the strongest critique of rationalist discourse norms is that they failed operationalize rationality as a team sport. emphasis on internal steelmanning over structured public debate (and dismissing all related prior art as "rhetoric") is a notable example
it's actually amazing how badly the quality of discourse falls short of, uh, the actual stated values of the thing. like there is no prohibition, formal or informal, against "just being a nitpicky asshole who runs out my opponent's energy"

this is no good. who's going to normalize the c-word now
v1.111 is live today!

We've upgraded our Age Assurance system to comply with upcoming laws in Australia and other regions, and to restore access to people over 18 in Mississippi.

Plus, we fixed some bugs and laid the groundwork for improved "who to follow" suggestions in the near future.

i don't think i should be this surprised by this thread

i am just very accustomed to rat critique that, uh, seems to 1) dogmatically take whatever the opposite of the rat position is on everything and 2) maybe not understand what's going on with rationalism, like why anyone buys in

the spectrum of behavior that leads me to just saying "fuck off" has expanded massively over time
I think that the longstanding trauma of this moment is going to be that many people in their 20-30s rn in not-quite-elite circles are going to be intensely small c conservative for a long time and have something of a hair-trigger for anything that smells of populism for the rest of their days
honestly i think you could probably describe the vast majority of American media, political, and corporate elites as decadent

nobody knows how bad things can get
