If you're a Jill Stein voter or someone who chose not to vote because "both sides are bad", incidentally? Fuck off. Unfollow me, block me, whatever, but get your filthy interactions away from me.

Republicans could override the filibuster and reopen the government with only 51 votes.

Any other solution requires the House, and Johnson is refusing to bring it back into session.

Republicans completely control the shutdown. They don't want to reopen the government.

If this were a reliable system then almost none of the stories I’ve reported (including the ones that won awards) were real.

The collapse of journalism means that many, many stories go unreported. Checking other news sources is one way to verify, but we must know and teach more methods than that.
I feel one million years old here, but we do actually have a pretty reliable way of knowing what news is true. Did a real newspaper publish it? Then probably yes. Can’t find it in a real newspaper? Maybe not.
A large majority of U.S. adults now get news digitally, but nondigital news consumers are less likely to say they extremely often or often encounter inaccurate news.

As I regularly note, "AI" at this point is an umbrella marketing term for a bunch or generative/machine learning/other formerly differently-termed processes that (of course) have no actual intelligence behind them. It means nothing useful for how the underlying computing proceeds. Thus the quotes.
I love how you used quotation marks around "AI." If you've been doing that all along, I'm kicking myself for not noticing. It's a misleading or just lying marketing term and we shouldn't accept and repeat it without pushback. Generative LLMs are not AI.

If you recall, Trump lied repeatedly about how some pre-Ellison CBS edits to a Kamala Harris interview were misleading.

Now the post-Ellison CBS is editing out parts of interviews with Trump clearly showing how he's a corrupt, blithering, thin-skinned idiot

see how this works?
Trump loses cool as he's grilled on '60 Minutes' — but CBS cuts it from broadcast
President Donald Trump got snippy as he was pressed about a suspicious pardon for a cryptocurrency billionaire linked to his own family at the end of his latest "60 Minutes" interview — but that quest...

America needs some kind of federal recall rules. If these public servants don't want to do their damn jobs, the public should be able to fire them on the spot (relatively speaking), instead of being stuck waiting until the next election.

PSA: Before this "dislike" thing gets out of hand, because I've seen some very big accounts misinforming people, here's what it actually is.

It's a private option that lets you see less of topics you're not interested in on certain feeds. That's it.

It's not a downvote, thumbs down, etc.

we were all brought into this world against our will & we should not have to pay to survive in it.
Anyway, SNAP should be universal. Just like school lunches in NYC. Not everyone needs it to survive but everybody gets it, no means testing.

There should also be a lot fewer regulations on what you can buy with SNAP and discounts, not bans, on hot prepared foods.

I'm finding this a lot. Some MOR liberal friends have tuned out because it's too depressing. So when I tell them about the beatings or detentions of US citizens they're puzzled, saying "they can't do that, it's illegal." They don't grasp the scope of this. They think it's just Epstein and ballrooms.
Recently my brother in law explained what gerrymandering was to a coworker and they didn’t believe him because if that were really happening there would be riots in the street
This week I had someone tell me they're not worried about SNAP being cut off because "that's illegal, so it's impossible Trump could do that, so obviously it's just media sensationalism." Another person told me they weren't worried about ICE because "they can't detain you if you're legally here."

ACA = “Obamacare”. Same thing. Its proof that many white folks would rather shoot off their own foot if they knew something helped a black or latino person get by too. Its no different from how they used to fill public pools with cement during integration resulting in everyone being hot & miserable.
America is so racist that some Americans believed SNAP benefits were for white people and food stamps were for black people and they did not know they were the same thing and are now horrified to learn they are losing their food subsidies.

“every time theres a republican president the economy collapses” feels like pretty easy messaging on the economy
Congrats to everyone who put Republicans in charge "for the economy," the first three quarters of 2025 already had more layoffs than any of the years in which Biden or Obama was President except 2009 (when Dems were still cleaning up the prior Republican mess).

I was deeply disappointed at the time. I think it was a case of just not being noticed as opposed to getting actively ignored/buried, but I think it was an important report that should have been picked up by more media.

Sadly, my reporting work has always gone down that way.
I’m still mad at how the industry and gamers ignored when you did the investigative journalism they keep asking you to do, when you covered Rockstars crunch and toxic work environment/conditions

It's appropriate that this sentiment comes after the industry realized that they haven't done anything useful in 20 years so they descended into mass psychosis over tech that does nothing but purports to do everything
2025 will go down as the year when all the subtext became text

you pay for WIC and you’ve never used it. Millions of people have never been on a plane and still pay for all the federal government functions at an airport that keep you safe whenever you take a flight. We live in a society. Everything isn’t for you. Get over it.
