Every backwards rural shithole in the history of the entire world has been a hotbed of reaction but everyone from French radlibs to Chinese communists thinks they’re the ones who are going to turn it around. There is nothing new under the sun.
as a white liberal with Southern roots, quite frankly, I think other white liberals from the South need to get the fuck over their oddly defensive attitude about what should be pretty blindingly obvious.
I understand why some white liberals from the Deep South want to insist that there isn't something distinct (and bad) about Southern political culture but the problem with this is that we wouldn't even have this idea of "The South" as distinct from the rest of the US if there wasn't a there there

This bit of the carceral state charging apprehended or incarcerated families for everything -- phone calls, health care, even room and board in the prisons -- is just really the point where neoliberal wealth extraction and pointed racist cruelty meet and commingle
NEW—US Park Police w/ DHS officers near DC are increasingly pulling over Black and brown men, leaving their work vans on the side of the parkway + immediately calling a local towing company to take them. Families who just lost their breadwinner are stuck with the bill.

@melbuer.bsky.social reports:
Families of DC-area immigrant drivers snatched by feds stuck with tow bill
Elected officials and activists note work vehicles removed lightning fast, resulting in hundreds in fees.

The Visigoths for instance did not really /conquer/ half of Gaul and Iberia, they were /given it/ in a grant, and over time casually increased their domains with the all but explicit permission of the emperors. Rome did not fall, it privatised itself.

The UK outright engaged in stationary banditry, stealing from the poor to give to the rich, all in order to appease the most petty xenophobe bigots on earth. And I feel sure it won't even work on the Home Secretary's terms, ultimately all this will strengthen not weaken Reform.
The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

They kidnapped a mayors daughter to stop police reforms
This piece makes it sound totally normal that the police gets to decide whether or not to "work with" Mamdani as mayor, and it continues, as nearly all the paper's coverage, to wield normative terms like "moderate" and left" in a prejudicial way. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/16/n...

Incredible video from Reddit (too large to upload the screencap). CBP agents attempt to detain a flower vendor and end up getting chased into a vacant lot by a crowd of teenagers. What a bunch of impotent sad sacks.

TL:dr, Bush v. Gore announced to the world that the court feels it has no need to settle disputes in accordance with law, but can single out particular cases to be settled outside of it. I think that is incredibly destructive to the concept of placing the state under law, which is vital to democracy

The "this ruling applies only to this case and should not be considered binding precedent" bit is a real tell that the majority knew what they were doing was lawless and corrupt and didn't want to be called on it by later courts.

i don't think that bush v. gore is the *worst* ruling in the history of the supreme court, but i do think it is the most openly *corrupt* ruling in its history. a real disgrace.

Part of the problem is that the Democratic Party and the liberal intelligentsia is overflowing with lawyers who over-apply legal reasoning and think "precedent" is a meaningful concept outside of a juridical setting. Turns out rolling over on Bush v. Gore doesn't didn't stop J6 from happening.

I do want to note Mamdani's transition specifically calling attention to like, people applying for city jobs and how many CVs they got in the mail, etc, because when was the last time you saw a politician actually talk about expanding state capacity other than hiring more cops?

thing about autism is if you work really hard for many years, you can learn through trial-and-error how to navigate social situations and interpersonal connections SO effectively that people don't really believe you're autistic anymore and resent you for not being perfect at nonverbal communication
