The lesson the whole world is drawing is "if you are fighting the US military, never surrender, because it is a fight to the death."

That's a very very bad message we just sent.

Excellent thread.
If your wage leads to a "tight" budget that still allows you to live in a "well-off Boston suburb" it is not poverty.
1/ I may write something about this, but I've noticed some folks, notably Noah Smith, but others as well, deriding the $140,000=poverty in today's US guy.

So I thought I'd work out what a family of 4 budget would look like in my well-off Boston suburb (Brookline).

TL:DR--pretty damn tight...

If the US Coast Guard stops a ship in international waters and seizes their cocaine, is that a war crime? The ship has not done anything illegal. Should we prosecute the Coast Guard Captain for piracy?

This is amazing, Meta poached Apple's user interface team lead Alan Dye and Apple has now poached Meta's Chief Legal Officer. Zuck is betting on designers, Tim on lawyers.

This whole thing reads as cope for not being tall, handsome, funny, athletic, empathetic and also a top decile US equity investor. Can’t imagine what that’s like.

This is interesting, they don't need the $ from a PnL perspective, growing over 30% YoY too. Can't fault management for ringing the register though.

🚨SCOOP: Amazon is preparing to sever ties with USPS and expand its shipping network as a true coast-to-coast rival.

It could cost USPS more than *$6 billion* a year in lost revenue, and lead Amazon to dominate yet another facet of the economy.

USPS posted a *$9 billion* loss in 2025.

I do tend to discount this exercise given the sheer weirdness of the current party support distribution but this is still an absolutely brutal indictment of Starmer and his government.

The thing about truth is that it’s immutable. Trying to dissolve it is like trying to drain the ocean. Sure you can nibble around the edges but eventually some combination of politics (best case), economics (bad case), or physics (worst case) returns everyone to reality.
This is maybe the one area of my life where I am a genuine pessimist. I think the dissolution of truth is inevitable in a world where almost all information flows through the internet, but even so I am dismayed that conservatives are right now trying like hell to own and hasten that process.

A lot of suicide attempts, especially among young people, are impulsive, which means that throwing up even temporary obstacles can save lives. It's not true that everyone who gets advice on how to kill themselves from an LLM would have figured it out anyway. These tools are causing avoidable deaths.
I am a suicide attempt survivor so I’m kind of selfishly interested in prevention and, again, while it may difficult to completely prevent IDEATION, what ChatGPT does (despite guardrails!) is *cheerlead and facilitate* completion. You can come back from ideation but not a chat-optimized completion.
This is not true. This is argument that pro-gun people use to discount red flag and waiting period laws. Ease of access and lethality (let alone cheerful instruction in the best method!) is the #1 predictor of attempts leading actual completion. The more barriers, the more people live.

Our monthly survey of consumers suggests that the narrative of middle and higher income consumers trading down for value is total nonsense. If anything, the opposite has taken place in recent years.
