like, this story is insane—letting a 92-year-old obviously incapable of driving keep his license while leaving pedestrians/cyclists with no protection from cars has killed more people than every waymo crash ever. It will be forgotten next week.

By the way, for those of you not in MN: Homan’s strategy was to withdraw some agents, so it felt like we were in the denouement of the crisis, and then escalate hard against observers. They’re being incredibly aggressive with observers now. National media may not want to check out just yet

Not only are Dems forcing a protracted DHS shutdown despite it not being able to stop ICE/CBP, even more crucially one of the demands *all Dems united* around is demilitarization of ICE/CBP

This is huge bc using paramilitaries for immigration enforcement was quite the reason ICE/CBP was created

Shocking but not really surprising. Horrific from way back.

The public made noise for Liam Ramos and it got him released from Dilley.

Now we must make noise for 7 year old Diana Crespo.

Her parents were taking her for emergency medical care when ICE grabbed them, and she’s rotting in the camp sick and exposed to measles.

Get them out!

I disagree esp the decline of Christian sectarianism led to the rise of JFK and and in part contributed to the crushing of the Klan in the Civil Rights Movement

The real problem (as it already been) is racial and ethnic divides remain paramount and white ppl will always fall back on this
No but seriously, the decline in Christian sectarianism is a huge problem, the whole edifice of religious freedom and secularism in the West is built on the idea that people needed neutral mediating institutions, and would accept compromises in service of that.
why are you asking a Protestant this

Again we can’t ignore US Virgin Islands, Guam, Northern Marina Islands, and American Samoa which all are US territories that need referenda like Puerto Rico

Nearly all these territories would vote for statehood and nearly all would be lean/likely Democratic
and furthermore, it’s very clear that the two most important political tests for the senate in 2029 once we take it will be:

1. expanding the Supreme Court

2. Admitting PR/DC as states
imo just mechanically vote for whichever Senate candidate promises most clearly to destroy the filibuster

Yeah the last point: ICE/CBP cant have access to military-grade weapons and equipment, removing their ability to be paramilitaries makes it clear congressional Democrats are pushing sensible reforms they know Republicans will reject so they can make the GOP look bad
People are going to be really mad that the ask here isn’t abolishing any deportation ever (which would be my choice if it was just up to me) but this is a very calculated list of reasonable asks that Republicans will lose their minds over, reinforcing revulsion in the American lizard brain.
Schumer & Jeffries lay out the Democratic demands for a DHS funding deal in a letter to the top Republican leaders
February 5, 2026 at 1:23 PM
Can’t reiterate this enough: this was the whole point of Klein’s interview with Dickerson (podcast Obama shared): Americans need to reckon with the terror that we are experiencing is what immigration enforcement is in the country: Congress gave ICE/CBP near absolute authority to deport undocumented

State control of elections has undermined democracy throughout US history. Jim Crow, the 2000 election, etc. It helped lead to Trump.

As Hasen notes, presidential & judicial supremacy are what we need to end. Independent national election admin works in parliamentary systems, & we should adopt both
February 3, 2026 at 10:06 PM
Ppl keep disparaging “Woke 1” but at least the Resistance understood this somewhat by centering democracy reform in HR 1

Woke 2 should not abandon the tactics of Woke 1 but expand into a new Reconstruction.

Bring back HR 1 but expand it w/ statehood for DC/PR & referenda for Guam/NMI/USVI/AS
Once Trump's regime is removed from power, we need a constitutional refounding to finally create a fully egalitarian democracy.

Reconstruction did not go far enough, and we can't repeat the failures of that era by keeping the flawed political institutions that helped bring us to our present crisis

AOC’s original position is pro-statehood; it’s just after she came into office Velàzquez convinced her to back off that stance publicly so “Nuyoricans don’t tramp on Boricuas from the island”

It’s bc Boricuas like Nydia emigrated/came of age when US brutally repressed & exploited PR
Puerto Rican statehood discourse is annoying because every prominent mainland Puerto Rican Democratic politician is in some way not pro-statehood or pro-independence (Nydia Velázquez, Jose Serrano, Darren Soto, Luis Gutierrez, AOC), but both islanders and mainlanders want statehood
i mean cool story bro but 58% of your neighbors disagree

Forgiveness is never required.

What IS required, regardless of the choices of the harmed parties,

is the work of amends and repair by harmdoers (or harmdoing body, if institution or even -- ahem -- nation)

even if what has been broken can never be truly unbroken

the obligation is still there.

We need to claim the mantle of what it means to be an American again precisely because these people need to be seen as fundamentally un-American and treasonous at their core
Not to sound too Resist Lib or anything but the Republican Party is a massive criminal conspiracy against the nation in the same way the Nazis were and not only do hundreds/thousands of people need to go to jail, but we need to talk about banning the GOP outright
