I don’t think I’d call them “wannabes” I mean DHS has been recruiting with white supremacist dog whistles. It’s highly likely they hit their target audience and recruited whites supremacists who are now hunting humans and leaving white supremacist symbols behind.

As a historian with a focus on the history of news media and communication: the reported news itself was/is never ‚what happened‘. It is a construction, an interpretation, a mediated version of a perceived event. And therefore news reports were always about making realities.
So important. What they say is not the story. That is never the story. What happened is the story. Write what happened.

New— An American citizen boarding flight from Boston to Lisbon just now told me after showing boarding pass, every passenger stopped on jetway by two ICE agents demanding to take their photo. When passenger asked why, ICE threatened to detain them. If they said no photo, couldn't board/TBD detained.
