Being human is to understand yourself.

Humanity is the understanding of others.

Empathy is the ability to understand ourselves in the difference of others.

Or in other words, empathy is the understanding of humanity.

Considering there are over a thousand accounts of sexual assault by ICE, women defending themselves from ICE "agents" by whatever means at their disposal falls squarely in the justification of "self defense".
Two women have been charged with biting the fingers of U.S. Border Patrol officers moments after federal agents fatally shot Alex Pretti in Minneapolis over the weekend near the scene of an immigration enforcement action.
Women accused of biting agents’ fingers moments after Alex Pretti was killed; one had tip bitten off
The biting occurred while the women struggled with the agents, according to the charges.

Early retirement isn't good enough.
Exclusive: Border Patrol “Commander at Large” Gregory Bovino has been removed from his role and is expected to retire soon, sources tell @nickmiroff.bsky.social.

Imagine a paramilitary gang kills 2 observers over 2 weeks, then shows up at your home to say, "You, observer, we know where you live."

That's a death threat.

If it happened to me or a colleague when I was a human rights observer in N. Ireland, we would've lodged complaints with three govts.
One human rights observer in Maine said agents followed her home, blocked off her street, and came to her door to say they know where she lives. Her children are now staying elsewhere, to keep them safe.
Now in Maine: ICE watchers say federal agents are coming to their house to threaten and intimidate them.

Reminds me of the time I interviewed for an internship at Palantir.

I aced all of the tech sections, hit it off with one of the creepy founders, and got a generous offer that evening...

Which I promptly declined.

Thanks for the free flights to hang out with my friends in SF for a weekend! 🖕
Palantir employees are pressing company leadership over its work for ICE in internal company Slacks obtained by @wired.com

also, it's a great app to use for ordinary everyday chatter. yes it's secure but it's not about being secure, it's about being NORMAL in a way that chat apps mostly fail to be. Having your conversations be ephemeral and not having everything logged somewhere is the normal state of talking to people
Also a huge benefit of using an app just like Signal, in addition to the encryption, is that it's just a normal app and you can blend in with the crowd among people who just use it for ordinary everyday chatter

Needle in a haystack
If you're running around telling people not to use Signal right now, you're either dangerously foolish or actively fighting against the cause, and I believe we lack the time to sort out which is which right now.

Signal is also infinitely better for sharing cute videos of your children or cats with your friends
Everyone should be on Signal at a minimum, simply because acting like you have nothing to hide until you need it harms all of our privacy rights.

Political Scientists would call it a "tactical concession" (RRS' Spiral Model). Human rights and democracy campaigners need to make sure it leads to more gains (positive spiral) instead of stalling progress (negative spiral).
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Important not to lose sight of what’s starting up in Maine right now.
Why is the msm outside of Maine not covering this? It seems like a huge and very troubling story to me. ICE coming to observers houses or calling them on the phone warning them to back off??!! www.pressherald.com/2026/01/23/i...

Like if you think tech sucks but you're still in tech I get it. I respect folks doing their best to fight the good fight.

But if you can't recognize what's happening in our society and it's relationship to technology, you're dangerous. These are the people who accidentally build the Torment Nexus.
Got added to a "Techno Pessimists" list. I'd like to thank the tech bros who see ICE uploading photos to Palantir and still think our society uses technology in a healthy way for preemptively removing themselves from my feed.

Carry on in your head-in-the-sand bliss, far away from me. 🫡
