it's the default machine you use in LA county if you vote in person, which i like to do, but the caveat is that CA went to mail-in voting as a default so the majority of votes are still the scantron paper ballots they mail out

LA county made a big thing before 2020 of developing its own open source voting machine and i was VERY suspicious of the effort but the end result is really very good, i have used it multiple times and it's both very intuitive and clearly creates a paper trail. helps when filling out long CA ballots

the machine that makes the ballot does not store any information about individual ballots, the paper version it prints out is canonical

one point is that some places (los angeles is the one i know) have "voting machines" that present the ballot representation to the voter, accept inputs, then print out a human-readable ballot from that input, which is the thing that is later counted by tabulators (or by hand if necessary)
