seeing obviously massively incompetent people succeed does not help any feelings of impostor syndrome I might have, and it doesn't seem like it should?

like if I'm concerned that I have attained a position that I'm not good enough for, here's evidence of other people doing so

Donald Trump’s 19-year-old son, Barron, could be in the running for a top job at TikTok, according to the president’s former social media manager.

Trump has previously claimed that he “saved” TikTok and that users now “owe” his government for allowing it to remain available in the US.

Jack Advent, the president’s 22-year-old former social media manager, joined in by saying that Trump should give his teen son a position on the social media platform to broaden its appeal for young people.

According to the bear's owners, the Cocaine Bear has the authority to officiate legally binding weddings in the mall where it is kept due to a loophole in Kentucky's marriage laws.[4] This claim is only partly true; the bear does not have the authority to solemnize weddings, but the state of Kentucky cannot invalidate marriages performed by unqualified persons if the parties believe that the person marrying them has the authority to do so.[16] As such, it is a belief in the Cocaine Bear's authority that allows her to officiate legally binding weddings in Kentucky.

going to say this louder: do not share headlines from the Daily Telegraph unless you have checked that the underlying facts support the headline, because they make shit up

especially if they wrote a sentence in passive voice, because with "Joe Bloggs said to be werewolf" it matters *who* said it

I linked to a different story because the Telegraph has a paywall, but its photo caption says "Barron Trump’s potential new role at TikTok was pitched by Donald Trump’s former social media manager" so I think it's the same underlying nonfacts.

I cannot in good conscience recommend that my undergraduate or masters students go to graduate school in the USA. I will support them if they apply but I cannot recommend it to them. This is a change from 30 years of practice in which that was my strongest recommendation.

the people whose job *is* to stop things in this exact situation, elected government doing illegal things, is the Supreme Court. And they are enabling Trump furiously, and there's nothing Democrats can do about that without retaking government and doing some radical (and necessary) things.
