It is disturbing but it is also as American as apple pie and I wish people would start saying things like "is a slap in the face of our highest ideals" or similar because have you met American history
Mark Kelly: "This president, when he says things like 'third world countries,' what is he really saying? I think what he's saying is he doesn't want brown people in our country. And that's disturbing. It's un-American."

game recognizes game
Why would the President help free a man who defrauded veterans, farmers, teachers, nurses, small businesses and over 10,000 across America of over $1.6 Billion? Is robbing from the poor to feed the greed of rich criminals the America we want?

So the thing is that the Republican party seems to have had an insight that you don't need to be popular any day of any year, except more popular than the other person on election day every four years, and being popular at any other time is inefficiency you can optimize out to free up resources

The president is a political cartoon of corruption come to life, a gaudy grifter who is selling off pardons and lining his pockets, building a golden ballroom and protecting his fellow sex predator elites, all the while regular Americans are suffering and struggling to make ends meet.

Run on *that*

Translation: Pete may well go down for this. But I’m not going with him.
Reporter: If there were a second strike that killed wounded people, would that be legal?

Trump: I don’t know that happened and Pete said he did not even know what people were talking about. I wouldn’t have wanted a second strike. The first strike was very lethal. It was fine.

conservatives basically want to implement the caricature of affirmative action for conservative students. acceptance without meeting qualifications, good grades and degrees without having to do the work.

The thing about laws and legality is once you reach the tipping point, the fascists rewrite the laws. The Holocaust was strictly legal under German law.
similarly "torturing prisoners" is the kind of thing that you'd assume is an illegal order...except these freaks made sure to create a legal justification for it. not illegal now!
"Don't follow illegal orders" would be more meaningful if Democrats had prosecuted literally any of the prominent war criminals of the last 30 years instead of, you know, fucking campaigning with them

I know who's *not* going to jail for war crimes. This guy!

They fired him on Aug 22nd.

Boat strikes started September 1st.

I wonder why they fired him? And fired all the Judge Advocates General?
Admiral Milton Sands III is a highly decorated Navy SEAL and was commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command. Basically, he was the final boss of the Navy SEALS.

He just got fired.

Listen to the respect and humility with which he and his soldiers talk about African and European military allies.

If the Venezuelan sailors were enemy combatants, then the 2nd strike is a war crime.

If the Venezuelan sailors weren’t enemy combatants, then both strikes are criminal murder.

It’s that simple.

The fact that they can’t show their work is the tell
Like the Oklahoma Junior who can’t write a damn paper, we should be making them cite the sources of their religious belief instead of asking them if they really super mean it
I think this falls in line with a growing push to recognize actionable harms when christian conservatives face things in public life they don’t like generally.

It’s the Hobby Lobbyfication of public life

It feels surreal, and like a new even darker turn has been taken in the anti-intellectual part of rightwing populism

this is just rank cowardice, the student very obviously disregarded the instructions and the assignment to antagonize her peers and instructors and provoke this exact reaction, society simply can’t function when the people in charge scurry like kicked dogs every time some troll bully says boo

the primary thing that TPUSA provides to young conservatives is a blueprint for weaponizing the abject cowardice of university administrators against individual teachers and instructors, and university admins should take a long look in the mirror and think about what that says about them

It's not very useful for actual work unless you are in one of a handful of niche fields
The numbers in here are hilarious.

Do you use AI on the job?
Execs: 87%
Managers: 57%
Workers: 27%

Planned investment by 2030: $5T
"Necessary" annual revenue to justify that spend: $650B
Current annual revenue: $50B
Three years into the generative-AI wave, demand for the technology seems surprisingly flimsy

This is really important. Civilian control of the military is incredibly important. But it implies that each of us has an obligation to not vote for people who will ask the military to do stupid, crazy things. Because the norm of civilian control will not withstand literally ANYTHING.
one of the things dr schake and i were both wrestling with in this conversation--i think not really conclusively--is how you maintain the norm of civilian supremacy when the civilians are issuing objectively illegal, murderous orders

Mafia government
They’re simultaneously arguing that soldiers have to follow all orders from the president, legal or not, but they get to ignore orders from a federal judge if they feel they’re not legal.
KARL: Did you know about the judge's order when you issued your order for the planes to continue?

KRISTI NOEM: This is an activist judge. We comply with all federal orders that are lawful and binding.
