The news is a torrent of horrors. Glee in domination and crimes against humanity. Dystopian tech and financialization. Antihuman futurism. All championed by sociopaths and raw id. We should be calling for humanistic moral revival, whether religious or secular.

Was on Civic Forum with @rorytruex.bsky.social talking about US democracy. We talked about political inequality & minority rule in the US, with a focus on my research on the states. But then talk about what's new in the more acute democracy crisis of 2025

The past few years have seen massive expansion of crypto (speculation), NFTs (speculation), sports betting (gambling), prediction markets (more gambling), and social media engagement farming (selling yourself or bots).

Surprising we don't hear more about decommodification in politics.

Climate change is killing workers. The fix is simple.

Water. Shade. Rest Breaks.

Our new Health Affairs study: California's heat standard was associated with a 33% drop in heat-related deaths among outdoor workers.

Now it's time for OSHA to adopt a federal heat standard.

Tight labor markets in the last decade reduced US community college enrollment.

Super interesting pic here showing just how countercyclical community college enrollment is (as compared to basically non-cyclical 4 year college enrollment)

A beautiful tribute to my legendary eighth grade English teacher was published in the Detroit Free Press.

(I've long said that someone needs to make a documentary about Detroit's Bates Academy. Everyone knows about Bates locally, but...the sheer impact of our school!)

For some reason Democratic leaders seem to prefer telling voters what they won’t be able to do, rather than what they’d like to do.

If Hegseth ordered a war crime and lied about it, shouldn’t Ds try for impeachment? Put Rs on the spot. They might get a few defections.

Jeffries says not to expect Democrats to pursue Hegseth impeachment over boat strikes
"Republicans will never allow articles of impeachment to be brought to the floor," he said.

Very interesting Gelman blog suggesting that a good amount of the "Mississippi Miracle" is selection bias (holding back lowest performers, who then don't take the 4th grade test) rather than improved learning

Affordability is dominating the discourse. What I don't like about the conversation is that it focuses almost entirely on prices—as if the only way to make life affordable is to make things cheaper. But affordability is determined by prices *and pay.* 1/
