I’m seeing convergence on 2 explanations for Dems caving: 1) Trump more willing to inflict pain on public than Dems (Ezra Klein), 2) protect the filibuster
But these are still puzzles (derogatory) because strategic actors should anticipate them. They don’t explain why now

Plausible but theories of Dem caving that I think are wrong
-nuked filibuster gives Dems less negotiating leverage on next budget
-nuked filibuster lets GOP ban abortion (or whatever other unpopular policy) right now because they have 51 votes
GOP would’ve nuked already if either were true

Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

I do be doing what Will is describing so here it is:
One rationale is that the past had more security, more in-person social contact and community, less competition and fear of falling behind peers, and more optimism about the future
But many think the past was materially richer. It wasn’t

Right, I’m talking about people who notably never step in and say something incorrect, but always seem to find a way to agree with the larger side, even when it’s incorrect.

do the social scientists who work for Andressen ever feel weird about it? like when the pope is like "hey it's good to be moral" and your boss is like "ew lol no we're doing gambling and bot farms"

The Pope tweeted something like "we have to think about morality and ethics with these new technologies" and then Musk and Marc Andressen tried to dunk on him, and now everybody (even in tech) is dunking on Musk and Andressen.

Black American soldiers literally dug these WWII graves. Traumatic. To acknowledge that fact at a cemetery they helped construct is something the Heritage Foundation cannot accept. As Veterans Day approaches, never forget that this country both compels and disrespects Black military service. Always.
1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

It’s no walk in the park to serve in Congress, and I don’t begrudge Golden for stepping away. But it seems likely that his polling numbers among his own constituents factored into the decision.
Favorability:
16% favorable | 41% unfavorable
Deserves to be Re-elected?:
26% does | 57% doesn’t
