With a couple of exceptions, the basic pronunciation is pretty much use, coming from Hampshire in the UK.
"The Prime Minister did not respond to a question about whether Canada is prepared to join European Union countries and Britain in building up a military presence in Greenland as a show of support."
This opens up wider questions about how far the UK and Canada in the 5 eyes intel sharing framework as well as other former allies of the United States can still provide the Americans with any sensitive intelligence information at all
Big picture: that US law supersedes Canadian law when it comes to US-sourced software provided by Canadian orgs (here, universities) puts the lie to the Carney government‘s claim that US tech companies can unproblematically be part of any Canadian sovereign cloud initiative.

By outsourcing IT to a U.S. company, writes Jim Stanford, students at more than 100 Canadian schools, including the U of T, are at the whim of Trump's U.S. trade

Ceding all forms of autonomy to Trump is now a well-established position within Britain's media and among British media owners.
Donald Trump’s so-called "Board of Peace" is offensive.

Mark Carney must reverse his decision to join Trump in this transparently colonial scheme.

Trump says he’s adding a 10% tariff to all the countries that sent troops to defend Greenland against an American invasion, increasing to 25% in June if he’s not allowed to buy Greenland.

“This is a very dangerous situation for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet.”
President Trump is keeping proceeds from the first sale of Venezuelan oil in an offshore bank account based in Qatar, according to reporting from Semafor.

The sale was worth $500 million. trib.al/aZqwY4o
Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

The court's decision is like a law-school hypothetical not dealing with what actually happened. Sure, the government shouldn't have had to invoke the Emergencies Act if the police had done their job properly... but the police refused to do act against a far-right occupation.

#Trump 's so-called #Gaza "Board of Peace" is a basically a front for the final erasure of Palestinian Gaza via real estate development and the creation of a Special Economic Zone / post-smart city / start-up city (whatever you want to call it...).

For my money, I think the definitive MK-ULTRA novel is probably PKD's A Scanner Darkly (1977), although he had been working on this on and off since the late 60s. And all of Dick's work in the from the 50s to the 70s is government and corporate paranoia central! Ubik (1969) is my favourite.

Although the revelations about Project Minaret, and the NSA-FBI watchlists and infiltration had been going on since the late 60s (the Church Committee was up and running by '75), Watergate was '72...

Dismal, uninspiring politics from unimaginative, timid politicians. Japan and the world deserves so much better.

Although actually most of the novels those last films are based on are pre-75.

John Brunner's big four novels all contain elements of this: Stand on Zanzibar, The Jagged Orbit, The Sheep Look Up, The Shockwave Rider.
Films pre-75: The Parallax View, Soylent Green, THX1138... just post '75: Logan's Run, Capricorn One, Marathon Man, The Boys from Brazil...
my new piece in FP: The US keeps telling people to rise up against their regimes, then leaving them to die. Hungary, Iraq, Syria...now Iran? I try to offer an explanation for this very consistent pattern. (gift link) foreignpolicy.com/2026/01/16/t...
