We note your concerns about a reference to ‘a biological male who identifies as a woman’. While the language used is intended to be clear and explanatory, easily understood by a wide audience, we do note your points and are sorry if you found the description to be inappropriate.
While we have used honorifics in previous articles covering this trial, they did not feature in this report. This is not unusual in our website’s output generally, most commonly when reporting about people with a public
profile. The article also made clear that there was divergence in court about how to refer to the complainant:
‘[The judge] explained that the prosecution used female pronouns to refer to the complainant during the trial, while Linehan’s defence used male pronouns. The judge said she had chosen to refer to Brooks using “gender neutral pronouns and as ‘the complainant’” in her ruling.’
BBC News doesn’t believe that the language used in this article amounts to taking sides, in an area with strongly held and sometimes incompatible views.

Of course there’s a fucking point to getting angry at organisations dropping trans people out of fear. It should be shameful and they should be confronted with our feelings of anger and betrayal.
