Thinking about this again, how one interpretation of mass demonstrations in 19th/20th century was that they were a show of force for the kind of mass warfare that characterized the age. In that sense, this encounter and others like it, more than the mass street marches, are serving that function.

I fuckin' hate this shit. Food being unsafe was responsible for so many deaths throughout human history. We have the ability to feed literally everyone in the world -and- have it be perfectly safe, but the people in power would rather you starve and eat metal shavings to make more money.
The FDA always had too few inspectors, and now they're even worse off. They have found moldy poorly cleaned machines constantly, and shit keeps trucking because the companies are barely fined for it. They would rather pay a fine for you getting sick/dying than shut down for a few hours to clean.
IIRC this is usually because one of the manufacturing machines was poorly maintained, so pieces of it broke off into the mixture. Its a massive fuckup and should be one of those 'caught immediately and batch thrown away' not 'oh shit we just noticed that' after they're in the market.

What Kalshi is suggesting, the financialization of all life, is a hop skip and a jump from where we are (55% or Americans placed a bet in 2024!), and I find all of it profoundly depressing. I don't even watch sports anymore but it hurts my heart to know how people are processing the games they watch
It all reads to me as Capital having nothing to offer us but a slim chance of winning our way out of living paycheck to paycheck. Unfortunately, Capital is both the house and a competing player who has all the tools to see further ahead then we do, so that slim chance is basically illusory.
