Thomas got into a huge battle with the senate judiciary committee (lead by Joe Biden) because he had multiple sexual harassment claims and Biden basically pushed him through fearing he'd look racist and/or partisan, which again, even to Thomas's benefit he resented quite a bit lol

Arguably a top 5 justice/lawyer in america ever, Thurgood Marshall, had just died and people were worried the court would become 100% white again, so they called his seat 'the black seat'. Then they voted on Thomas who was the only black federal level judge who was a conservative lol.

Thomas is sort of a different angle, I'm sure he had some of that growing up but he really hated how patronizing white elites were. Thomas was a beneficiary of affirmative action multiple times and resented it, including getting on SCOTUS because he was the only black conservative judge at the time.

The broader understanding was that republicans were somewhat more racist, but among republicans they really held onto "Well they started the klan and we have a black guy who says they're more racist" in the form of Thomas and Sowell and the most popular radio show in America said that daily.
