We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

My Job Will End. The Mission Won't. - On October 10, 2025, I was effectively laid off from CDC as part of the Reduction in Force. I am on admin leave until early December, when my position is scheduled for termination - though there is still a chance for that decision to be reversed. It's a strange and heavy place to stand: not yet gone, not yet safe — still committed, still hopeful for our nation's future.
I'm reminded that leadership doesn't end when your name is on a list. It continues in what you choose to protect: the mission, the knowledge, the people, and the conviction that public health is not a budget line item. It's a responsibility — to act, to prevent harm, and to serve the greater good.
Whether this chapter closes or changes course, my focus remains the same: to uphold the principles that guided my work at CDC - readiness in emergencies, leadership through uncertainty, and turning data into action when lives depend on it.
The responsibility to serve when the public needs us most cannot be reduced, reorganized, or replaced. We adapt and endure. Because this work — our work — has never been about titles or positions. It's about people.
To my colleagues, both inside and out: hold fast. The story isn't over yet.
