RIFed:
Office of Science (OS) - MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report)

MMWR is crucial to quickly disseminate info about infectious disease.

Like the famous MMWR in 1981 about an outbreak of pneumocystis pneumonia among gay men in LA. That was the first mention of what is now known as AIDS
June 5, 1981—The First Report of AIDS in the U.S.
By Erika Mills ~ In the June 5, 1981 edition of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), the CDC described a rare lung infection among a group of gay men in Los Angeles. This article, titl…

I personally prefer it when babies don't get lumbar punctures for the sake of defensive medicine, but maybe I'm weird for that.

(also, to be clear, the reason much of Europe does this but the US doesn't is because the epidemiology of N. meningitidis capsule group B differs by geography)

It's funny how the antivaxxers in charge of our vaccination policy claim to want to have our vaccine schedule to look like those of Europe, but then don't think about the fact that much of Europe does 4CMenB vaccination at 2-3 months, which often triggers fever and then forces a sepsis workup.

This is called policy-based evidence making (the antipode of evidence-based policymaking, a thing we should all want)

This perfectly encapsulates how right-wing politics works and why it is so dangerous.

Rather than observing the world as it is and proposing changes, right-wing politics start with an idealized conception of the world and go about reshaping reality to confirm to that vision.

I think that trying to memorize the cytokines for the vast majority of people is not necessarily a good use of time. I certainly don't know all of them. I like to think I know the important ones (but if I start listing them every immunologist will want to fight me for not including their favorite)

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

I cannot provide you with further insight. You know exactly as much as I do on this matter.

This is intended to simplify things because these are all part of the IL-1 family of cytokines so you can just identify them as IL-1 family member X

I'm bothered by the fact that the numbering order is not consistent (also where is IL-1F9?)
