Another superb piece by Lisa Jarvis, on the leaked COVID-19 vaccine memo

Prasad "provided no data or research to support the claim — an irresponsible and dangerous approach to regulatory oversight. It is also wildly out of step with the agency’s typically careful process of reviewing safety data."
Prasad's leaked memo makes reckless and dangerous claims without evidence and offers a concerning glimpse into the future of vaccine regulation in the US — one that could have profound implications for both access to and the development of vaccines.

I listened to the new Sarathy Korwar album last night, "There Is Beauty, There Already," in one sitting, which I think is the way it should be heard; tracks flow into each other

This is the music we need (well, I need!) right now: meditative & enriching

The MAGA/MAHA government is a terrorist regime—imagine doing this & then claiming you’re making America “great” & “healthy” again. Imagine what this boy & his dad are going through right now. I’d love to ask the physicians in the regime (Oz, Makary, Bhattacharya, Hoeg, Prasad) why they support this

You can easily see why Donald Trump & Russell Vought wanted to hire the MAGA hero Jay Bhattacharya to lead NIH & push forward the extreme, right-wing, toxic, Project 2025 agenda. Bhattacharya wrote this in OCT 2023—he was already pushing kooky conspiracy theories & salivating about NIH funding cuts😢

This is an absolutely brilliant thread

Scientific communication at its finest

“No country has ever reverted from universal to selective HBV birth dose vaccination because it works. It's been one of public health's quietest triumphs.”

I hope to goodness ACIP does not delay the birth dose
It's very concerning that the ACIP may vote to delay hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccines for children, as reported by
@reuters.com

Here's why. 🧵

“Listen to the voice of Buddha
Saying stop your sericulture
Little people like your offspring
Boiled alive for some god's stocking
Buddha's watching, Buddha's waiting”

This song turns 50 next year (🤩) & it remains one of the greatest synth-pop tracks of all time

News: Government vaccine advisors have excluded industry and CDC experts from its review of the hep B vaccine

Officials have skipped usual safety data consultations with the makers of the shots, which they will review this week

CDC experts and manufacturers haven't been consulted for an ACIP review of hepatitis B vaccine, raising concerns over any change in the vaccine schedule.

Exactly this.
When people prioritize ideology and political agendas over scientific evidence, they focus only on the side that supports their position. Case in point: Prasad's memo uses unsupported claims of dead children to justify ignoring the many benefits of COVID vaccination
Prasad's memo focuses only on the potential risks of vaccines, without considering their benefits or citing how many lives they have saved, says @angierasmussen.bsky.social. One estimate finds vaccines saved the lives of 299 children from 2020 to 2024.

Very sad to see his trajectory (when I worked as a BMJ editor, I knew and met Peter Gøtzsche, back when he was still in the reality-based, science-based, evidence-based community)
The sole author here, Peter C. Gøtzsche, was expelled from the Cochrane Collaboration for his increasingly extremist screeds against drug company research, breast cancer screening & COVID & HPV vaccines.

He started his "Institute for Scientific Freedom" to continue his fringe anti-vaccine views.

Yeah this journal has been on my radar for a bit, they're now "publishing" articles in advance of peer review too
Finding another awfully done "study" in this "journal" ➡️ googling the authors ➡️ finding one is a teaching prof in an English department (WILD) ➡️ finding his awful rate my prof page filled with complaints like "he really is a weird guy that looks at girls in an uncomfortable way"
Is anyone in public health still following the weird fake journal story?

"Journal of the Academy of Public Health" is now "publishing" articles in advance of peer review.

Is this where we're gonna see fake garbage studies "proving" that vaccines cause autism show up in the coming months?

RFK Jr has been WILDLY, WILDLY successful—surely beyond his wildest dreams—in his extreme, dangerous anti-vaccine crusade, aided of course by powerful elite MAGA and MAHA MDs and PhDs like the Great Barrington Declaration dudes (Drs Bhattacharya & Kulldorff) & Drs Makary, Prasad, Hoeg, and Oz

This is, um, quite something

Peter Gøtzsche (who writes for the kooky anti-vaccine Brownstone Institute) LOVES RFK Jr—arguably the world’s most dangerous, extreme conspiracy theorist & anti-vaxx activist—& thinks @bmj.com engaged in “character assassination”

Wow, the firings:

"The N.I.H. lost nearly 3,000 employees this year, or about 14 percent of its work force"
Bhattacharya’s NIH 😢

“Earlier this year, it delayed reviewing grants in order to vet research by political appointees, culled projects that mentioned D.E.I. and fired thousands of employees or pressured them to retire early.”
“Thousands of very competitive projects in areas like cancer, diabetes, aging, neurological disorders and public health improvements most like went unfunded in 2025.
Similarly, at the National Science Foundation, the roughly 3,000 fewer new grants encompassed reductions to every area of science”
