I wish more folks understood you can see something on the internet that is not for you and just keep on scrolling.

lol of course, every single time

you know how whenever a Christian gets called on being antisemitic, they suddenly discovered they have Jewish ancestry?

I feel like this is the same, but for being a condescending misogynist

I'd never be judgmental about accessing the Web. Apps are not the Web. Sir Tim is shaking his head at you.

ACTUALLY, I have a theory that most books enter a cultural "uncanny valley" 20-25 years after release, where the culture has shifted just enough they're not contemporary anymore, so new readers can't directly relate, and they stay in the valley for about 50 years until they're clearly historical
madoccassia.bsky.social
Is there, like, an interregnum during which a book should be gracefully retired, until such time as it becomes "a classic, an artifact of its times"?
delafina777.bsky.social
We’re arguably in an especially weird space right now in which we have unprecedentedly easy access to discussion/analysis of the context (if it exists) but also an increasingly fractured/niche cultural landscape in which shared context can’t be assumed even for current media.
scalzi.com
It's every bit of culture. Movies, TV, plays, music, theater, painting, dance. Everything ages and context is lost and new audiences don't attach to the work the way then-contemporary audiences did. It doesn't make the work bad or suggests it can't endure. But times change.

I don't even think it's just books. Almost nobody understands the Looney tunes references anymore and my children were completely gobsmacked trying to watch the original Aladdin.

I will never forgive whoever in the party reined in Tim Walz on calling them weird.

During the election the whole "joyful warrior", "these guys sure are weird" tactic truly and effortlessly got under their collective skins.

They tried to get us to fear them, Portland has shown us that we out number them.

Mocking them is worse to them than if we were violent towards them.

Hamlet's to be or not to be is NOT a sincere soliloquy, but a deliberate ploy to convince the King and Polonius that he might kill himself so they don't take action. "Death, the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveller returns" is complete bullshit, he's doing revenge FOR A GHOST HE SAW

My favorite aspect of the Columbus legend is him getting rejected by the Portuguese gets spun as them not recognizing the genius of his idea. No - he went into a roomful of expert navigators and made basic math mistakes, they thought he was a moron, and they wouldn't fund his idea on that basis.

Just ... take the W people.

The more we credit these organizations for taking the baby steps opposing Trump, the more likely they are to do them.

And baby steps add up.

The fascinating thing about it was that no one involved seemed clear on whether they were making a prestige drama or a Lifetime movie.
delafina777.bsky.social
I watched 3 episodes, and neither of those things happened.
delafina777.bsky.social
So with Quebert, I kept waiting for a twist that revealed that the narrative was aware the main character is an almost self-satirizingly pretentious failson, or for anyone to care that his mentor, who he’s trying to clear of murder charges, is an undisputed pedophile.
delafina777.bsky.social
I began watching it because Google recommended it when I asked for recommendations for shows like The Woman In Cabin 10 (which I DO recommend, Keira Knightley is always great).

But the more reasonable reason to not have a bullshit laser on your person is that you are every bit as much a blinding hazard to your fellow protestors as you are to law enforcement. If you happen to be arrested and have that laser on you, you will not have a good time.

For people getting the advice “It’s dumb to do it alone, you need to do it en masse”, the counterpoint is that it is also dumb to make it hard to navigate a large flying heavy thing when you under it. This is also why it is a felony.

This weekend I watched a few episodes of the most (boringly, tawdrily) deranged thing on Amazon Prime.

It was called The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair.

do you guys ever think about how in a better world José Andres could just like. have some restaurants. and instead he’s consistently doing the work we’re supposed to have governments for

Government workers 👇🏾
Lunch is on the house:

Being in the heart of downtown DC, we love that so many of our Federal employees stop by during lunch for a Donburi at China Chilcano or a Fútbol Club at Jaleo. And just because the government is shut down doesn't mean you have to miss out on your favorite lunch spot- because this time, its on us!
Join us for lunch from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM at any of our participating restaurants and enjoy a free lunch item when you present your government ID-you heard that right! Dine in with us Monday through Friday and choose your favorite: a sandwich at Jaleo, a donburi at China Chilcano, a wrap or pita at Zaytinya, or a torta at Oyamel.
We've always believed in serving our community with open arms and good food-no shutdown can stop that.

My hot take is that none of these are structure. These are all recipes that describe structure.

Structure is the Salt, Fat, Acid Heat of writing.

3-Act/Hero's Journey etc are recipes.

You can make great meals without using a recipe if you understand the principles of structure.
ddwardiswriting.bsky.social
So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?

You’re just as likely to kill people on a medevac or normal commercial flight as you are to stop the feds from doing anything.

Fucking think it through, people.
jakeythesnakey.bsky.social
This is such an astoundingly bad idea that I kinda think it’s a false flag or an op of some sort

Merits aside, it is insanely easy to be caught if you do this and the punishment for doing this is much more severe than you’d guess.
