“Why does Bruce Wayne spend all this time as a vigilante and not fixing Gotham’s problems?”

Because every origin story damn near comes out and bashes you over the head with “this city is straight up evil.”

Breaking Bad and Batman are the two most purposefully misunderstood pieces of entertainment in the internet age.

BrBa straight up tells you he’s a power-hunger sociopath who just wants to be king and Batman tells you Gotham is just a horribly cursed city that can’t be saved by social services.
Breaking bad was about a guy who had many opportunities for his healthcare to be paid for (his former business partners, jrs accidental money laundering go fund me), but he preferred selling meth because ruining other people's lives feels more manly than accepting gifts.

I blame the Big Bang Theory.
I have an extreme hatred of how "autist" has been equated with "idiot with no prosocial inclinations"
“he wasn’t tripping balls, he’s just autistic” is frankly insulting spin

What are some good books for understanding the Suez Crisis?
people have largely forgotten what a cartoonishly evil plot Suez was, partially because, I think, the Americans weren't involved in doing it, only in stopping it.
Stumbled upon a really funny post on here which said that Syria started a war with Israel....during the Suez Crisis of 1956.

So it kind feels like what happened here w the Cueller pardon is that someone got in Trumps ear & told him that if he pardoned Cueller, he'd be so grateful that he'd switch & become a Republican and Trump...went ahead with the pardon without actually checking in w Cueller first to establish that lol
he uhhhh talking about a quid pro quo here... in a social media post
Trump rages that Henry Cuellar didn’t pay him back for a pardon by switching parties, blasting Cuellar for a “lack of LOYALTY.”

In other words, Trump admits he was trying to use his pardon power to buy Republicans a House seat.

Some say the world will end in fire
Some say in ice
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I side with those who favor fire

But if it had to perish twice
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great and would suffice

"Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)"

and

"I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you."

I'm not even that much a fan of Whitman, but these are great!

he opted, not just for DDDD, but for the foreshadowing 3rd line to be a verbatim echo of the 4th line

and considering those words… it suggests to me an unspoken fifth verse:

And miles to go before I sleep
And miles to go before I sleep
And miles to go before I sleep
And miles to go before I sleep

it goes AABA, BBCB, CCDC…

so the third line of each verse foreshadows the next

now, come the fourth and final verse, Frost has options for resolving this pattern. he could have gone DDAD, bringing it full circle, but that would have been a very different poem

The woods are lovely, dark and deep
But I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep
And miles to go before I sleep

here's the thing: Robert Frost's "Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening" has a very deliberate, plodding meter (iambic tetrameter)

and a very deliberate rhyme scheme…

there are less known and more verbose poems that i love but honestly the ones that stick with you are the ones that are simple. it's a classic but its breadth is infinite

America is like Alaska in that people move here in order to run away from something (laudatory)
my paternal great grandparents got off a boat in Newark and were americans from the moment they touched american soil. my only objection to that pattern is that i think we should send a plane to pick up anyone who declares themselves an american.

Y'all, I just wrote an answer to a question about the sensationalized news headlines circulating about the Chernobyl containment structure.

The bottom line is that there's a hole in the structure, which is not good, but it's not the end of containment, which some reports make it sound like.

🧵
The way this is being reported is extremely irresponsible.

There is a hole in the containment structure, about 10 feet across. No other damage is reported. That hole can allow some of the dusty radioactive material to escape.

That is what "can no longer do its job of containment" means.

One thing I want to know more about is the extent to which the NT may just be lumping in multiple competing intellectual factions as 'pharisees', b/c one thing that *is* clear about religion in 1st Century Judea is that there were *A LOT* of different factions within factions within factions.
ok I know this is tangential to the original post but that story in the Christian Bible actively misrepresents Jewish religious law and beliefs which explicitly permit breaking religious commandments for the purpose of saving a life. פיקוח נפש is a critical halachic principle
The end of that story in the Bible is Jesus telling the Pharisees to go learn what it means for the Lord to say “I desire mercy and not sacrifice.”
