Spaniards actually famously exploited the larger ambitions and hegemony of the Aztecs and their associated city states to drive a wedge between them. All involved were engaged in active diplomacy and adaptation to the political circumstance. This is such a fucking lie.
clserdaigle.bsky.social
This is ideologically noxious but also flatly untrue lol. The Maya were no longer a “ruling civilization” by the time Spaniards arrived. The Aztecs had quite historically recently undertaken a project of establishing hegemony over other cities and regions of Central America.

"Sapiens" is so normal for the first 70,000 years of human history but then goes absolutely buckwild as soon as it gets to colonialism
Had the Aztecs and Incas shown a bit more interest in the world surrounding them - and had they known what the Spaniards had done to their neighbours - they might have resisted the Spanish conquest more keenly and successfully.

Showing up to No Kings with a sign reading “monarchy is an affront to human dignity but, when incorporated into a liberal democratic system, may nevertheless be a useful safety valve for nationalist and/or authoritarian impulses” and then getting clobbered by a Buttigieg-supporting grandmother
mthrjo.bsky.social
Incidentally, I’ve been chafing a bit at the “No Kings” thing, because there are loads of monarchies that have more limits on executive power than the US does, but it has the great advantage that it makes Americans who want to oppose it sound, well, unamerican….
sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com
one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

Putting together pictures for my mom’s funeral made me appreciate how precious mom pictures are

I have a personal rule that whenever I see a mom in public taking a posed picture of her family I offer to take a picture of all of them because moms do not get enough pictures

woulda been very easy to say “sorry, Gordon Ramsay put those here. He’s not from here so he didn’t understand it might be in poor taste to have a picture of a person who murdered community members here in recent living memory”. Instead they outed themselves as callous assholes too
clserdaigle.bsky.social
The funniest thing about this story is that Gordon Ramsay put the pictures there as part of his undercover-themed kitchen nightmares reboot (including white van stakeouts), and the owners didn’t take the obvious road out of the controversy when they were first confronted about it

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

Whistling when ICE is about to kidnap someone for no reason is incredibly effective. They know what they are doing is wrong and will scatter in the wind when too many witnesses gather.

(By the end of term 1 I had talked to the aforementioned student about this, and she stopped doing it. This was around the same time that she started asking for academic support and doing much, much better in school)

Because that’s *true* and it’s in the kid’s voice. It gives me insight into who they are and where they are at socially, academically, often emotionally— especially when it’s a panicked email about a grade or a homework question. I can respond to those cues in a way that is helpful!

I had a student last year who at the beginning of the year used AI to write her emails to me (because she didn’t feel like her own words were good enough). It muddled up communication a lot. I would much rather have the messy emails where they accidentally put everything in the subject line

Any kind of bullying is fundamentally anathema to public education. Which is probably another reason they like it.

Not all 12 year olds are evil, but I can concede that some of the worst people do act like the worst 12 year olds, just aged out of the time that their teachers and parents are able to give them consequences for their actions. And I think a lot of them still resent the teachers who tried.

I teach at an exam school in Boston (and Mamdani went to a specialized public high school in NYC) and I believe in the importance of G&T education and I think Boston has done a good job in the last few years bringing more equity to exam schools, and some controversy is worth weathering.
