The thing is, we need to eat and we need resources to do the work. Somebody’s gotta pay for it.

1. If you want indie journalism, you gotta pay for it.

2. Paywalls work. I resisted using a paywall for a long time until I realized I had to if I wanted to pay my bills.

3. Journalism is a public good that doesn't exist without public support. Keep it out of billionaire hands with a paid sub.

We do have a paywall, and that's because journalism has a cost. We pay all our contributors 0.50c a word & the founders haven't been compensated for the year, so we do ask for people to pay for our content. We still haven't made a profit this year, so we are unapologetic about that.

FWIW, the meaning of the quote, which is a paraphrase of Ziblatt, is that the Republican Party be strong enough to eject Nazis. It’s not a comment about giving them power.

The Pelosi quote means the opposite of what this asshole claims.

My parents' generation was super racist, but they took pains to hide it from us. So a lot of young conservatives in the 90s and early aughts were earnest small government and/or evangelical types.

As I said, the overt racists and radicals had to form their own orgs.

It's also a grievance-based culture, which I think is more to the point of Dave's observation. The slights are not forgotten because they're a motivating force and a way to delegitimize their opposition as 'always having been wrong.' For goodness sakes, they still bring up Robert Bork!
