The sustainability conversation, as it stands, is stuck, and it will stay that way until we’re honest about the financial system perpetuating the problems. Brands point to supply chains they themselves created through decades of offshoring, then cynically claim those supply chains are too complicated to reform. Brands talk about the value of collaboration, as if they and their billionaire owners don’t hold much of the power. They insist living wages aren't their responsibility. They set climate targets without funding the clean energy investments that manufacturers would need to meet them. But the solutions here aren't that mysterious. They require money for longer-term supplier contracts, for decarbonisation, for wages that let workers live with dignity. That money exists in the fashion system already.

Think of it like a vessel or a vehicle for your consciousness to interact with the simulated world.

I want to write an extremely niche article on how the cover designs for books on the history of medieval England rarely feature works of art produced *in* England bc surviving works of art are rarely sufficiently naturalistic to illustrate the books' claims the way a book cover is expected to do.

Ask yourself if that is normal. That one should be concerned about permanent career damage for pointing out problems.

It's just software. I'll eat humble pie if I end up being wrong. But this language of "fear" is political, ideological.

When you hear "better than nothing," ask whose responsibility the "nothing" is, and whether the "better than nothing" solution simply lets them abdicate that responsibility & check the box.

AI is the ultimate "better than nothing" technology. Don't negate this argument — reject the whole framing.
