As online ID check laws spread, companies are working out how to comply. It’s Day 5 of our week of action- we’re putting the spotlight on YouTube.

YouTube rolled out age verification this summer to appease lawmakers, smoothing the way for more dangerous laws to pass.

There are lots of other ways to address the very real harms that kids experience online:

✅ Strict privacy laws that make it illegal to harvest data and use it to recommend content

✅ Antitrust laws so we have real choices for where to go online

✅ Regulate features like autoplay & infinite scroll

The thing to understand about "age verification" laws is that they are not just for kids

The only way to "stop kids from doing xyz online" using age-gating is to demand a government ID (or invasive biometric face scan) from EVERYONE.

This means associating your gov ID with EVERYTHING YOU DO ONLINE

This is ALWAYS what the TikTok ban was about. It was never about China or “child safety.” Same for KOSA and these other “online safety” bills in congress right now. The goal is complete and total control over online speech and independent journalism
Hillary Clinton blames TikTok and “totally made up” videos for young people’s views on Israel and Palestine.

She says social media influenced “not just the usual suspects” but also “young Jewish Americans who don’t know the history and don’t understand.”

I left a message with my congressman and even the staffer sounded surprised about this. Call your reps and senators because it's a safe bet that some are clueless about it. We can also assume that the ones pushing for it are clueless too. Bug them and make this idea so toxic that it gets buried.

Some potential good news out of yesterday's theatrical House hearing on internet censorship bills. A pre-emption provision has even KOSA supporters like NCOSE abandoning the House version.

With ten days to go, there seems to be little appetite for KOSA or age-verification bills in general.
