Although @joshtpm.bsky.social has a blind spot on Israel, I just read this piece and find myself in violent agreement.

I hesitate to identify as a Democrat because of my disgust with the cowardice and corruption of most leadership, but I'm glad to see that the much of the base feels the same way.

no one will ever convince me that the services - or at least the army - give a shit about fitness when we encourage sleep habits that are universally acknowledged as extremely detrimental to servicemembers, and, by extension, combat performance.
Crossfit is stupid and so is he but high standards for physical fitness are essential and Ds interested in national security should be very careful publicly rolling their eyes around the topic

i kind of think this is why YIMBYism and density is so important: the more you can essentially move suburbs away from their status as wealth enclaves, the bluer they get
The maximalist good outcome for us is what I've called "the woke 4th party system" where the GOP is reduced to its cracker Solid South (ruby red rurals and exurbs) but locked out of power national because they are just blown to smithereens in the suburbs and cities

Same here, please. If I ever have either a house and/or a man-cave again, I would love to display this!

How W. E. B. Du Bois responded to government policing of "anti-American" sentiment during the 1910s:

"I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, 'We are seeking to have the Constitution of the United States thoroughly and completely enforced.' ”

Reminds me of the tremendously obese security guy with Nordic tattoos at the Best Buy near where I live who wears the tiniest plate carrier I’ve ever seen, like the body-armor equivalent of a string bikini
Semi-related but I've noticed that there is a substantial drive among US tactical units to wear JSOC/GBRS hype beast gear which extends to micro swimmers cut plate carriers that are wholly unsuitable for policing environments. It already indirectly led to the death of one SWAT officer in Washington
Look at this fucking shit. In Chicago the "elite" CT unit of the USBP detained (a violent assault resulting in 6 broken ribs) a 67yo US citizen driving home from his morning run, then tear gassed a Halloween party with kids in attendance. There's no reforming this. It's unamerican and unacceptable

You might note conservatives exclusively write these at outlets with large liberal readership. You and I know, say, Douthat is a conservative writing in bad faith, but many Times readers see the masthead and assume he's on the level. Don't print lies in the newspaper
The “Person who wants a political party to lose describes what that political party must do to win” genre of article is just incredibly insulting to everyone’s intelligence yet it will persist until the end of time

in practice something of a dirty secret is what FBI discovered w/ revolvers. Because so much of fire is suppressive or misses, giving people weaker ammo and higher magazines seems to be functionally best

It is not a good thing that the past 20 years have been an unrelenting "fuck you" to people who believe in the goodness of humanity and following the rules.
you cannot keep doing this without eventually becoming misanthropic and feeling that the values you grew up with are meaningless and the people around you will excuse anything as long as it doesn’t personally inconvenience them

this strikes me as something akin to when Greenspan remarked in 2008, about his prior economic ideas, "I have found a flaw. I don't know how significant or permanent it is. But I have been very distressed by that fact."

Greenspan has not since become a champion of social democracy, however.

I agree w Emily there needs to be more housing for incremental life stages. I have 0 disagreements w her policy recommendations

My emphasis for "family" housing (as a developer) is on building Baby Maybe units rather than Studios, bc I think they are under supplied relative to demand

I'll explain🔽
Pro-housing voices from the right of center are increasingly focused on a "we need housing For Families" framing.

In a new column I explain why broad-based liberalization, especially for inexpensive types of housing, is important for helping people start families: www.governing.com/urban/to-sup...
To Support Families, Repair the Housing Ladder
The cost of housing is one big barrier to family formation. But simply building more single family homes isn't the answer.

This is going to cause a lot of tension in the base. Yes, MAGA-Groyper-Nazi-Nazi-adjacent is on the rise. But on the issue of Israel and Jews, evangelicals, who stood by Trump even after C'ville comments and everything else, are unlikely to let the Fuentes contingent rise to the top.

As a thought experiment, let’s think through how US military officers can violate their oath to the Constitution, transition their perspective to… something else. Hypothetically. In case it happens on its own.

Not on internet fringes, in WOTR.
Hard to imagine a more sinister & dangerous argument, couched in euphemism & high-minded language. "This essay does not argue liberalism will collapse, only that [US] military officers should be intellectually (and spiritually) prepared for alternatives." warontherocks.com/2025/10/the-...

Have had it hypothesized to me before that Israel's image can be salvaged among the American center-left simply by way of the American center-right going fully Hitlerite but I don't really think this will happen. What's likelier is Israel loses its special status among both flanks.

called it, this is their only way out that doesn’t require making public concessions to Dems

it also firmly assigns blame (if they do this now why couldn’t they have done this earlier) and will give waffling Dems a lot more ammunition for their own filibuster reform when they take power
Trump: it is now time for republicans to eliminate filibuster
