Extraordinary NYT story:

Trump’s DOJ pressured out another US Attorney in WESTERN Virginia for finding that a grand jury probe his bosses demanded was unwarranted.

They wanted a case discrediting the Russia probe — evidence be damned. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/14/u...

That's like four economics awards in a row with a substantial economic-history component, right? That strikes me as a remarkable shift. www.nobelprize.org/prizes/lists...

If I were a DC reporter, I’d consider maybe pressing Johnson on how he reconciles these two statements.
@atrupar.com

Mike Johnson: "We're so angry about it. I mean, l'm a very patient guy, but l've had it with these people. The theory we have right now -- they have a hate America rally that's scheduled for October 18 on the National Mall. It's the pro-Hamas wing and antifa people ..." @atrupar.com

Mike Johnson: "People have got to stop framing simple policy disagreements in terms of existential threats to our democracy. You can't call the other side fascists and enemies of the state and not understand that there are some deranged people in our society who will take that as cues to act."

I got up early & wrote 750 words of my article on working with @jodipicoult.bsky.social on her book, By Any Other Name. it feels good to be writing again.

maybe the brain zaps are working.
I read an early draft of By Any Other Name while at the beach with my family. I remember the moment I first encountered Shakespeare in the text. I was not happy: “This [man] was slighter, with a receding hairline and a weak chin badly camouflaged by a dark beard” (144). Emilia immediately remembers reading one of his very bad plays as Hunsdon’s companion. At the bar, Shakespeare claims, “I, too, will write for the stage” and Emilia thinks “Badly” (144). When reading this exchange, I thought: “Jodi, you don’t have to be so mean about it.” Quickly, though, I realized that this is exactly the sentiment built by Shakespeareans Picoult wanted to poke at—the belief that Shakespeare is a god beyond reproach.

So does any unpopular speech... oh, I get it now.

Trump: "We took the freedom of speech away because that's been through the courts and the courts said you have freedom of speech, but what has happened is when they burn a flag it agitates and irritates crowds."

When I ask them to change it, they whine about having to do it manually, like they are replacing a loose rivet on the 50th floor of a skyscraper under construction.

Right? I think I had a publisher once want to break up "outhouse" after the 'h'.
