Now Trump wants U.S. banks to divert ANOTHER $20B away from lending to American businesses, farmers, and families to prop up Milei's corrupt presidency and failing economy.

So much for America First.

I keep telling people who want prognostications that we're at a moment of extremely high variance. The future could plausibly go in a wider variety of directions--from full-on authoritarianism to backlash promoting a Third Reconstruction--than at any time in recent history.

Dear media,
1/ ICE consistently lies about its violence toward people in Chicago, with its initial accounts later disproven.
2/ When protesters shout at ICE agents to get out of their neighborhood and ICE tear-gasses them and throws them to the ground, that's not a "clash" – that's ICE violence.

I responded that my book iss based in historical evidence and fact and that my job as a scholar is to be accurate-- not to make people feel good or bad about their country. I, for one, am very proud of the Reconstruction Amendments. I mean WTAF? 2/2

At a conference last year a prominent senior political scientist told me he was "disturbed" that I was using settler colonialism as a frame in my book on US migration & citizenship history because I should "give the MAGA people something to be proud of in their history." 1/

I fear that schools being willing to drop diversity programs without a fight shows how flimsy their commitment to inclusion was in the first place. People fight for things they truly believe in.

Victor Ray, a sociology professor at the University of Iowa who studies race, said in an email that OSU’s decision to interpret federal guidance in this way “reflects the real pressure universities face as the Trump administration and Republican legislators attack higher education.”

But, Ray added, it may also be exposing the true colors of many universities that were broadcasting their commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion when it was politically expedient to do so just a few years ago.

“The swiftness with which these organizations have complied with legally dubious orders shows that their commitments to diversity were often paper-thin before this administration’s pressure,” he said. “In many cases, administrators with existing qualms about diversity, perhaps going too far, now have political cover to take anti-equitable actions.”

Lost a day of prep and cooking time for a dinner party on Thursday because came back a day late from the west coast. Still cooking 5 dishes and dessert, stuff that can be prepped ahead of time. Cut the fussy dish (chawanmushi) with a higher margin for error.

Trump has cancelled $18B of spending in blue states. He fired more than 4,000 federal employees the same day he sent $20B to Argentina. He is propping up the government of the guy on the left, while firing government officials working for the guy on the right. But those employees also work for us!

I spent an extra night in Denver coming home because there was bad weather in NYC on Monday night and, I suspect, the air traffic control tower was under-staffed, leading to long delays and limiting the # of planes that could land per hour.

My cousins and I surveyed the distance between Angel Island and San Francisco and speculated if we could swim it if we had to. We have no idea how strong the currents are.

One of our aunts swam from mainland China to Hong Kong in the 1950s is how we got the idea.

Just returned from SF where I went with my cousins & their kids to explain the history of Angel Island immigrant landing depot. It's an island off of SF, look how close it is to SF, yet for detained immigrants who were there, it was a world away to getting to the US. Was in operation 1910-1941. 1/

I just checked and this is real. It's on Border Patrol's official Instagram (I don't see it on Facebook) and is being celebrated by Nazis on Twitter, as you can see in the screenshot.

The clip is just 13 seconds long too, so it's a very intentional thing. We've got a Nazi government.
